Grade 9 Social Studies: What the CBC Curriculum Covers and How It Is Assessed

Social Studies, which since 2024 also includes Life Skills, has four lessons a week in Grade 9, a suggested 120 lessons. It is unusual in that it directly helps your child prepare for senior school. Its first strand is about choosing a pathway. This guide is accurate as of October 2026.

How Social Studies Is Assessed in KJSEA

Social Studies is a single paper, 907, lasting 1 hour 30 minutes, on Thursday 29 October 2026 from 11.10 a.m. The community service-learning project is carried out in school as part of learning.

Revision Tips for Parents

  • Read a topographical map together. Map work is a skill, not memory. Practise scale, direction and symbols.
  • Talk about the Constitution. Pick a right from the Bill of Rights and discuss a real news story where it applies.
  • Use local examples. Rivers, dams, heritage sites and indigenous knowledge in your own community make answers concrete.
  • Revise in summaries. Strands 3 to 5 are content-heavy. One-page summaries per sub-strand work well.
