Grade 7 is the first year of Junior School, the three-year middle stage of Kenya’s 2-6-3-3 system. It brings new learning areas, more teachers and, for many children, a new school. It also starts the three years that decide senior school placement. This guide covers what changes in Grade 7, as of October 2026.
The Nine Junior School Learning Areas
Since the 2023–24 rationalisation, Junior School has nine compulsory learning areas, cut from fourteen. Every learner takes all nine, and there are no optional subjects. The week was reduced to about 40 lessons, including the Pastoral Programme of Instruction (summary of the MoE circular of 20 December 2023):
- English
- Kiswahili (or Kenya Sign Language)
- Mathematics
- Integrated Science (now including Health Education)
- Social Studies (now including Life Skills)
- Pre-Technical Studies (combining Pre-Technical, Business and Computer Studies)
- Agriculture & Nutrition (Agriculture combined with Home Science)
- Religious Education (CRE, IRE or HRE)
- Creative Arts & Sports (Visual Arts, Performing Arts and Physical Education & Sports)
KICD curriculum designs set out the strands and sub-strands for each learning area and grade. Public junior schools are funded through capitation and may not charge levies (JSS fees and capitation 2026).
Grade 7 Assessment Counts
School-based assessment (SBA) in Grades 7 and 8 makes up 20% of the senior school placement score. KJSEA in Grade 9 makes up 60%, and KPSEA from Grade 6 the remaining 20%. KNEC sends the SBA tasks, and teachers administer them and upload the scores. In 2026 the Grade 7 and 8 SBA window ran from 28 September to 23 October. A missed task can mean a missing score, so watch the school calendar (SBA explained).
Helping Your Child Settle In
- New subjects need new vocabulary. Integrated Science and Pre-Technical Studies use technical terms. Ask your child to teach you one new word each day.
- Organisation. Nine learning areas mean more books and assignments. A simple weekly timetable on the wall helps.
- Start noticing interests. The senior school pathways (STEM, Social Sciences, Arts & Sports Science) are chosen in Grade 9. Grade 7 is a good time to see what your child enjoys and does well. Read pathways explained.
- Stay in touch with the class teacher. Junior School has subject teachers, so one contact person matters.
