About This Exam
Grade 8 Social Studies builds on Grade 7 and leads directly into the Grade 9 KJSEA. School and publisher end-term exams differ in format, so we use one-mark multiple-choice questions from the KICD Grade 8 curriculum design, close to the KJSEA style. School-based assessment marks from Grades 7 and 8 contribute to the final KJSEA result, so this year’s work counts.
Topics Covered
- Map work: grid references, bearings and scale.
- Weather, climate and vegetation: the anemometer, equatorial climate, altitude and temperature, semi-desert scrub and mangroves.
- Resources and economic activities: fishing in Lake Victoria and the water hyacinth, hydroelectric power on the Tana, tea growing and pastoralism.
- Trade and transport: international trade, the East African Community and the port of Mombasa.
- History: the Uganda Railway, resistance led by Koitalel arap Samoei, independence in 1963 and becoming a republic in 1964.
- Governance and citizenship: the Judiciary, the two houses of Parliament, general elections, the KNCHR and citizenship by registration.
- Population, peace and the environment: rural–urban migration, resource conflicts and waste management.
How To Revise Map Work
Map questions are reliable marks. Bearings are measured clockwise from north, so east is 090°, south 180° and west 270°. For scale, change map centimetres to real kilometres by multiplying by the scale and dividing by 100,000. Practise with a ruler on a real topographical map extract if the school has one.
How To Revise History And Governance
Make a timeline across a page: 1896 (Uganda Railway begins), 1963 (independence), 1964 (republic), 2010 (new Constitution). For governance, draw the three arms of government and list who heads each and what each does. Visual summaries are easier to recall in an exam than paragraphs.
Common Mistakes
- Measuring bearings anticlockwise or from south.
- Confusing independence (1963) with becoming a republic (1964).
- Thinking the Senate and the County Assembly are the same body.
- Explaining Nairobi’s cooler climate by distance from the Equator instead of altitude.
Pacing The 60 Minutes
Map and scale questions take longest, so answer the quick recall questions first, then return to the calculations with a ruler and rough paper. Leave five minutes to check that every question has an answer. In the online paper, a blank answer scores nothing, just as in the real exam.
Free Questions And Full Access
The first five questions, on maps and weather, are free for everyone. Learner members unlock all 30 questions, timed mode and every explanation, with results saved. Membership is free for 7 days, then KES 500 a month.
