Grade 6 CBC Guide for Parents: KPSEA and the Move to Junior School

Grade 6 is the final year of primary school under CBC, and the year of the first national assessment, the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA). KPSEA is not a pass-or-fail exam and does not decide which junior school your child joins. It does count later, though. This page explains Grade 6 for parents, as of October 2026.

Learning Areas in Upper Primary

Grades 4, 5 and 6 make up Upper Primary. After the 2023–24 rationalisation of CBC, the Ministry of Education cut Upper Primary from ten learning areas to eight, and from 40 to 35 lessons a week, including the Pastoral/Religious Programme of Instruction (summary of the MoE circular of 20 December 2023). The eight are:

  • English
  • Kiswahili (or Kenya Sign Language for deaf learners)
  • Mathematics
  • Religious Education (CRE, IRE or HRE)
  • Science & Technology
  • Agriculture & Nutrition (Agriculture merged with parts of Home Science)
  • Social Studies
  • Creative Arts (Art & Craft, Music and Physical Education combined)

Indigenous and foreign languages are now co-curricular rather than examined learning areas. KICD publishes the curriculum design for each learning area and grade. The designs set out strands, sub-strands, suggested learning experiences and assessment rubrics, and teachers plan from them.

KPSEA in Grade 6

  • Dates in 2026: the KPSEA papers run from 26 to 28 October 2026.
  • Weighting: 60% comes from school-based assessment in Grades 4–6 and 40% from the national papers set and marked by KNEC.
  • Why it matters later: 20% of the KPSEA score is carried into the Grade 9 placement score for senior school, alongside 60% from KJSEA and 20% from Grade 7–8 school-based assessment.

Full details are in KPSEA explained. Results are reported as performance levels (CBC grading explained).

Moving to Junior School

After Grade 6, learners join Junior School (Grades 7–9). In public schools this is usually in a comprehensive school, often the same primary school. Public junior schools are funded through government capitation and should not charge levies (JSS fees and capitation 2026). The number of learning areas rises from eight to nine, with Integrated Science, Pre-Technical Studies and Creative Arts & Sports introduced.

How to Help in Grade 6

  • Keep revision calm and short in the weeks before KPSEA. Sleep and breakfast matter more than late nights.
  • Check that your child’s details on the KNEC registration are correct.
  • Keep the KPSEA result slip safely. Schools and scholarships may ask for it later.
