For each one you get the Bible reading named in the curriculum, the main story or teaching in a few lines, and the lesson learners are expected to draw from it. A self-test with answers is at the end.

The strands, sub-strands and Bible references below come from the KICD Grade 6 curriculum designs (CRE, revised 2024), which give the subject 90 lessons over the year. Read each passage in your own Bible alongside these notes.

Strand 1: Creation

My purpose: talents and abilities (Exodus 31:3; Romans 12:4)

God filled Bezalel with His Spirit and with skill to make things for the tabernacle, and Paul teaches that the body has many parts with different functions. Lesson: every person has God-given talents, and we nurture them with values like hard work, humility and patience and use them to serve others.

Marriage and family (Genesis 2:21-24)

God made woman from the man’s rib and brought her to him; a man leaves his parents and is united with his wife. Lesson: marriage is God’s plan, and family members should love and respect one another. Early marriage is discouraged because it cuts short education and harms health; values such as self-control, obedience and responsibility help young people avoid it.

Leisure (Genesis 2:1-3; 1 Timothy 5:13)

God rested on the seventh day and made it holy. Paul warns against idleness and going from house to house gossiping. Lesson: rest is good, but leisure should be used well, for example for sports, reading, music, church activities and helping at home, not for idleness, harmful screen use or bad company.

Strand 2: The Bible

The inspired Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching and correcting. Authors include Moses, David and Paul, among many others. The Bible was translated into local languages so that people could read and understand God’s word for themselves, which helped the spread of Christianity.

The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-17)

The first four commandments are about our relationship with God (no other gods, no idols, not misusing God’s name, keeping the Sabbath holy) and the other six about our relationship with other people (honour parents, do not kill, commit adultery, steal, lie or covet). Values: respect, honesty, obedience and love.

Samson defeats the Philistines (Judges 15:14-17)

The Spirit of the Lord came on Samson, the ropes on his arms fell off and he killed a thousand Philistines with the jawbone of a donkey. Lesson: Christians depend on God’s power to overcome challenges.

Faith in God: Elisha and the axe head (2 Kings 6:1-7)

A prophet’s borrowed axe head fell into the River Jordan. Elisha threw a stick into the water and the iron floated. Lesson: trust God in every difficulty, even small ones.

Jacob wrestles an angel (Genesis 32:22-30)

Jacob wrestled until daybreak and refused to let go until he was blessed; his name was changed to Israel. Lesson: be persistent in prayer.

Strand 3: The Life of Jesus Christ

  • The call of the disciples (Mark 1:16-20): Jesus called Simon, Andrew, James and John, who left their nets and followed Him at once. Christians today serve God in church and daily life.
  • The temptations of Jesus (Luke 4:1-13): in the wilderness the devil tempted Jesus to turn stones into bread, to worship him for power, and to throw Himself from the temple. Jesus answered each time with Scripture. Lesson: overcome temptation through God’s word and prayer.
  • The Roman officer’s servant (Matthew 8:5-13): the officer believed Jesus could heal his servant just by giving an order; Jesus praised his faith and the servant was healed. Lesson: pray for the sick and have faith.
  • Faith in God: the bleeding woman (Luke 8:43-48): a woman who had bled for twelve years touched the edge of Jesus’ cloak and was healed; Jesus said her faith had healed her. Today the church and government help the sick through hospitals, clinics and visiting the sick.
  • Lazarus raised from the dead (John 11:32-45): Jesus wept, then called Lazarus out of the tomb after four days. Lesson: God has power over sickness and death; comfort those who grieve.
  • The hidden treasure (Matthew 13:44-46): a man found treasure in a field and sold everything to buy the field. The Kingdom of God is worth more than anything else.
  • The rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31): a rich man ignored poor Lazarus at his gate and suffered after death, while Lazarus was comforted. Lesson: use wealth to help people in need.

Strand 4: The Church

The Apostles’ Creed is a statement of Christian belief: in God the Father, Creator of heaven and earth; in Jesus Christ His Son, who was born of the Virgin Mary, suffered, died, rose again and ascended; and in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Trinity is God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Standing firm in faith (2 Corinthians 6:3-7): Paul and the apostles endured troubles, beatings and prison with patience, kindness and truthfulness. Values: endurance, honesty and love.

Church unity (Matthew 16:18; Galatians 3:28; 1 Corinthians 12:12): all believers are one in Christ, like many parts of one body. Churches show unity by worshipping, praying and doing charity work together.

Strand 5: Christian Living

This strand covers choosing good friends (1 Corinthians 15:33; Proverbs 13:20-21), responsible sexual behaviour and respecting the body as the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:18-20), the sanctity of life (Exodus 20:13), and avoiding alcohol, drugs and substance abuse (Ephesians 5:18). It is covered in detail in our Grade 6 CRE notes on Christian living.
