Grade 9 CBC Guide for Parents: KJSEA, Pathways and Senior School

Grade 9 is the most important year of Junior School. Learners sit the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), choose a senior school pathway and subject combination, and list the schools they want. The result decides where they spend Grades 10 to 12. This hub collects everything a Grade 9 parent needs, as of October 2026.

Key Dates and Facts for 2026

  • KJSEA papers: 26–30 October 2026, after a rehearsal on 23 October (full timetable).
  • Placement score: KJSEA 60%, Grade 7–8 school-based assessment 20%, KPSEA 20%.
  • Grading: each learning area is scored on an 8-point scale from EE1 (8) to BE2 (1). There is no mean grade (grading explained).
  • School choices: twelve in total, nine boarding (three in the home county, six outside) and three day schools in the home sub-county.

Start with KJSEA explained, then placement and pathways and choosing a pathway. For revision help, see how to help your child revise for KJSEA.

The Nine Junior School Learning Areas

Since the 2023–24 rationalisation, Junior School has nine compulsory learning areas, cut from fourteen. Every learner takes all nine, and there are no optional subjects. The week was reduced to about 40 lessons, including the Pastoral Programme of Instruction (summary of the MoE circular of 20 December 2023):

  • English
  • Kiswahili (or Kenya Sign Language)
  • Mathematics
  • Integrated Science (now including Health Education)
  • Social Studies (now including Life Skills)
  • Pre-Technical Studies (combining Pre-Technical, Business and Computer Studies)
  • Agriculture & Nutrition (Agriculture combined with Home Science)
  • Religious Education (CRE, IRE or HRE)
  • Creative Arts & Sports (Visual Arts, Performing Arts and Physical Education & Sports)

KICD curriculum designs set out the strands and sub-strands for each learning area and grade. Public junior schools are funded through capitation and may not charge levies (JSS fees and capitation 2026).

Grade 9 Learning Area Guides

Each guide covers what the Grade 9 curriculum design includes, how it is assessed and revision tips.

After KJSEA

Once results and placement are out, plan for fees and costs. Public day senior schools charge parents nothing, and public boarding is capped at KSh 53,554 a year (senior school fees 2026). If money is tight, apply for scholarships as soon as calls open (bursaries and scholarships).
