Sehemu Kwa Sehemu (Section By Section)

Ufahamu (comprehension). Our paper has two passages of ten questions each: a story about a village that harvests rainwater, and an information text about mobile money and fraud. Questions test facts, the meaning of words in context (maarufu, adhuhuri, akiba), the writer’s attitude, the lesson (funzo) and the best title (kichwa). As in English, read the questions first, then the passage, and find the sentence that proves each answer.

Kujaza mapengo (cloze). Fifteen gaps in one passage about reading. Most gaps test noun-class agreement (ngeli): dakika zinaweza, mwanafunzi ambaye, vitabu vya. Others test connectors such as hata hivyo, ilhali and kwa kuwa. Read the whole passage before filling any gap.

Sarufi na matumizi ya lugha (grammar). Ngeli, plurals (ukuta → kuta), tenses, opposites and synonyms, connectors and prepositions, types of nouns, adjectives, methali, nahau, reported speech (usemi wa taarifa), negation (ukanushaji) and verb voice (kauli ya kutendwa).

Ngeli: The Key To Kiswahili Marks

More marks depend on ngeli than on any other single topic, because agreement runs through adjectives, verbs, relatives and possessives. Learn the common classes with an example noun each: A-WA (mtoto/watoto), KI-VI (kiti/viti), U-I (mti/miti), LI-YA (jicho/macho), I-ZI (nyumba/nyumba), U-ZI (ukuta/kuta) and KU (kusoma). Then practise full sentences: Mti mrefu umeanguka, Miti mirefu imeanguka.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the A-WA agreement for everything, as in “mti mrefu ameanguka”.
  • Forgetting that “dakika”, “nyumba” and similar I-ZI nouns take zi- in the plural.
  • Negating the present tense wrongly. The correct form is “hawachezi”, not “hawacheza”.
  • Leaving “kesho” unchanged in reported speech. It becomes “siku iliyofuata”.
  • Half-remembered methali. Learn them in full: “Haba na haba hujaza kibaba.”

Preparing For 902/2

Paper 2 is written, so practise one insha a week in about 35 minutes, following the instructions on type (barua, hotuba, hadithi) and length. For the set novela and tamthilia, know the characters (wahusika), themes (dhamira) and style (mtindo), with an example for every point.
