About the Grade 9 CBC Challenge

Grade 9 is the KJSEA year. This is practice, not a KJSEA paper or a result prediction: ten questions, each marked straight away with the working.

What the Grade 9 questions cover

Mathematics: indices, cubes and cube roots, logarithms, money, linear inequalities, equation of a straight line, similarity and enlargement, trigonometry, volume of solids, density, probability and bearings.

Integrated Science: structure of the atom, metals and alloys, water hardness, nutrition in animals, nutrition in plants, interdependence of life, curved mirrors, waves and reproduction in plants.

English: reported speech, active and passive voice, modal auxiliaries, features of style, gender-neutral language, usage, vocabulary, register, comparison of adverbs, order of adjectives and correlative conjunctions.

Each go draws ten questions at random from the Grade 9 bank, so going again gives a different mix. Aligned to the KICD curriculum designs and checked by the CBC Guides team. Spot an error? Tell us.

Getting the most out of it

Short and regular beats long and rare: one quiz a day across the three subjects, plus five minutes on the topics the score card suggests.

Score card, levels and privacy

The level on the score card (Exceeding, Meeting, Approaching or Below Expectation) is indicative, worked out from the KJSEA mark ranges reported in the press. Ten questions cannot replace classroom assessment. How CBC grading works explains the levels.

There is no leaderboard. Comparisons are optional and only switch on once at least 20 real children have taken the same quiz. A parent joins with a nickname, a county and their consent. We never ask for surnames, schools or phone numbers.

Other grades: Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.
