CBC Holiday Homework and Revision Packs: Grade 4 to Grade 9

Kenyan schools close three times a year: in April after Term 1, in August after Term 2, and for the long December holiday after Term 3. Many parents want something useful for their children to do in that time without paying for classes. This section gives you free holiday homework packs for CBC Grades 4 to 9, written for home revision with a parent.

Every pack is written from scratch for that grade and that holiday. The questions follow the strands in the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) curriculum design for each learning area, use Kenyan settings (markets, matatus, shambas, our lakes and towns), and come with answers and a simple marking guide. Each pack also has a printable PDF with the answers at the back, so you can print the questions without them.

Packs for Grades 4, 5, 7 and 8 are being written and checked. We publish each one only when every question and answer has been checked. We do not put up placeholder pages.

Is Holiday Homework Allowed? Holiday Tuition Is Not

Parents often ask this. Section 37 of the Basic Education Act, 2013 states that “No pupil shall be subjected to holiday tuition”. The penalty is a fine of up to KSh 100,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both. The Ministry of Education has restated the ban, for example in a memo to regional directors dated 30 July 2025 (Education News).

The law is aimed at organised holiday classes, in or out of school. It does not stop a child revising at home, reading, or finishing homework a teacher gave before the holiday. That is what these packs are for. Use them at home, at your child’s pace, and never as material for paid group classes.

How Much Holiday Homework Is Enough?

Less than most parents think. Children have worked for three terms, and rest is part of learning. A sensible routine for most families:

  • Grades 4–6: 20–30 minutes, three or four days a week.
  • Grades 7–9: 30–45 minutes, three or four days a week.
  • One learning area per sitting. Let your child try alone first, then mark together.
  • Talk about how they got each answer. That conversation is worth more than the score.
  • Build in real-life practice: measuring for a recipe, budgeting at the market, reading the newspaper, helping in the shamba.

What Makes These Packs Different

  • Aligned to KICD strands. Each section lists the strands it covers, taken from the KICD curriculum design for that grade.
  • Answers explained. Answers show the working or the reason, not just a letter or a number.
  • Written for the moment. The December Grade 6 and Grade 9 packs are written for learners who have just finished KPSEA or KJSEA and are moving to a new school level. They are not exam drills.
  • Checked by the CBC Guides team. Every question and answer is checked by our team before a pack goes up. Spot an error? Tell us through the contact page and we correct it quickly.

For background on assessments, see KPSEA explained, KJSEA explained and CBC grading. For revision habits that work in term time too, read how to help your child revise. Each grade has its own hub: Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8 and Grade 9.
