This is a December 2026 holiday homework pack for Grade 5, for parents to use at home. Schools began closing for the long holiday on 15 October 2026, and children are home until early January 2027, when your child moves up to Grade 6, the KPSEA year (Daily Nation, 18 October 2026, citing the Ministry of Education’s 2026 calendar).

Nothing here is exam drilling. The pack revisits the Grade 5 ideas that Grade 6 builds on: large numbers, fractions with renaming, millilitres and grams in Mathematics, the breathing system and heat transfer in Science, and question tags and the future tense in English. Every question is new, written for this pack in Kenyan settings and matched to a strand in the KICD Grade 5 designs. Answers sit under each set behind a “Show answers” button.

Holiday Tuition Is Banned, Home Revision Is Not

Under section 37 of the Basic Education Act, 2013, “No pupil shall be subjected to holiday tuition”. Breaking it can mean a fine of up to KSh 100,000, a year in prison, or both. That rule targets organised classes during the holiday. Revising at home with a parent is not holiday tuition, and this pack is for home use only.

How to Use This Pack

  • Twenty to thirty minutes, three or four days a week. Let the rest of the day be for play, chores and family.
  • Let your child try alone first, then mark together. Ask “how did you get that?” for every answer, right or wrong.
  • Make the measurement real. Read the millilitres on a cooking-oil bottle and the grams on a packet of flour before doing those questions.
  • Mark online or on paper. Online, tick or cross each answer and the score is saved. The printable PDF has all the answers at the back.

Show answers: Mathematics
  1. (a) Place value: ten thousands; total value: 30,000. (b) Twenty-four thousand, six hundred and five.
  2. (a) 46,400 (nearest hundred) and 46,000 (nearest thousand). (b) 135, 240 and 905 (they end in 0 or 5).
  3. 245,780 + 318,465 = 564,245 seedlings.
  4. 600,000 − 372,548 = 227,452 trees (check: 372,548 + 227,452 = 600,000).
  5. 245 × 36 = 7,350 + 1,470 = 8,820 loaves.
  6. 672 ÷ 24 = 28 learners (check: 24 × 28 = 672).
  7. (a) Divide top and bottom by 6: 2/3. (b) 3/4 = 6/8, which is more than 5/8, so 3/4. (c) 7/9. (d) 1/2 = 2/4, so 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4.
  8. (a) 0.053, 0.305, 0.35 (compare as 0.053, 0.305, 0.350). (b) 2.375 + 1.450 = 3.825.
  9. (a) n + 15 = 42, so n = 42 − 15 = 27. (b) y = 36 ÷ 4 = 9.
  10. (a) 2,350 ml (b) 3,400 g (c) 4,250 m (d) 3 × 60 + 40 = 220 seconds.
  11. Volume = l × w × h = 10 × 6 × 5 = 300 cm³.
  12. (a) 350 + 120 + 50 + 280 = KSh 800. (b) 1,000 − 800 = KSh 200. (c) For example: keeping money safe (savings accounts), giving loans, transferring money, changing foreign currency.
