Arts & Sports Science is for the performers, makers and athletes. It has two tracks, and every learner still studies academic subjects alongside them.
Wondering if Arts & Sports is right?
What the pathway is
What the Arts & Sports Science Pathway Is
The Ministry of Education’s guidelines, citing KICD, give this pathway two tracks. Arts has three subjects: Music and Dance, Fine Arts, and Theatre and Film. Sports Science has one: Sports and Recreation. Because the pathway has only four subjects of its own, KICD gives it the widest list of complementary subjects: any Social Sciences subject, plus Computer Studies, General Science, Mathematics, Business Studies and Media Technology.
That matters for parents worried that this pathway is “only” art or sport. In practice, a learner’s three chosen subjects often mix one or two arts or sports subjects with an academic one, such as Biology, Business Studies or a language. In the Ministry’s list, half of all Sports Science combinations include Biology and the other half General Science. Every learner also takes the four core subjects: English, Kiswahili or Kenyan Sign Language, Community Service Learning and Essential Mathematics (or Core Mathematics if permitted).
Who tends to thrive here
The clearest signal is real, sustained talent and effort, not just enjoyment: a child who practises without being told, performs in music festivals or drama, draws constantly, or competes in a sport at county level and above. Strong results in Creative Arts & Sports in junior school help, and teachers who coach your child in co-curricular activities are often the best judges.
Careers it leads towards
- Arts: music performance and production, graphic and fashion design, animation, film and television, acting, architecture (with Mathematics), art teaching and the creative industries.
- Sports Science: professional sport, coaching, physical education teaching, physiotherapy and sports medicine (with Biology), fitness, sports management and sports journalism.
As with all pathways, post-Grade 12 entry requirements for the new certificate will be set by KUCCPS and institutions and are not fully published yet. Choosing an academic subject alongside the arts or sports subject keeps more university courses open.
Which schools offer it
This is the pathway where the school matters most. Music needs instruments and a music teacher, Theatre and Film needs space and equipment, and Sports Science needs facilities and coaching. Fewer schools offer Arts & Sports than STEM or Social Sciences. Search our senior school finder by county, then check each school’s combinations on the Ministry’s selection portal. If your child is a serious athlete or performer, also ask the school about its record in festivals and competitions.
Preparing in Grade 9
KJSEA still counts for 60% of the placement score, so keep up all learning areas. Practise Creative Arts & Sports, Integrated Science and English, and try the Grade 9 CBC Challenge.
Questions parents ask
Frequently Asked Questions
What subjects are in the Arts & Sports Science pathway?
Music and Dance, Fine Arts, and Theatre and Film (Arts track), and Sports and Recreation (Sports Science track). Complementary subjects include any Social Sciences subject, Computer Studies, General Science, Mathematics, Business Studies and Media Technology.
Can my child still go to university from Arts & Sports?
Yes. Senior school prepares learners for university, TVET or careers in every pathway. Pairing an arts or sports subject with an academic subject keeps more options open.
Is Arts & Sports for learners who did poorly in exams?
No. It is for learners with interest and potential in the arts or sport. It is a choice, not a fallback, and placement still uses the same combined score as other pathways.
Do all schools offer Arts & Sports Science?
No. A senior school must offer at least two pathways, and many do not offer this one because it needs specialist teachers and facilities. Confirm on the selection portal.
