This is a December 2026 holiday homework pack for Grade 4, for parents to use at home. Schools began closing for the long holiday on 15 October 2026, and children are home until early January 2027, when your child moves up to Grade 5 (Daily Nation, 18 October 2026, citing the Ministry of Education’s 2026 calendar).

Grade 4 is the first year of Upper Primary, so this pack goes back over the year’s big ideas without rushing ahead: numbers up to ten thousand, fractions and money in Mathematics, the digestive system and states of matter in Science, and the tenses your child met in English and Kiswahili. Every question is new, written for this pack in Kenyan settings and matched to a strand in the KICD Grade 4 designs. Answers sit under each set behind a “Show answers” button, so your child can try first.

Holiday Tuition Is Banned, Home Revision Is Not

Section 37 of the Basic Education Act, 2013 says “No pupil shall be subjected to holiday tuition”, with penalties of up to KSh 100,000, a year in prison, or both. The law is aimed at organised holiday classes. A child doing a short set of questions at home with a parent is not holiday tuition, and this pack is meant only for that.

How to Use This Pack

  • Fifteen to twenty-five minutes at a time is plenty for a nine- or ten-year-old. One learning area per sitting, three or four days a week.
  • Read the question with your child before they start. Many mistakes at this age come from missing one word in the instruction.
  • Keep it hands-on. Use real coins for the money questions, a kitchen jug for litres and a packet of sugar for kilograms.
  • Mark together. Open the answers, tick what is right, and talk about one mistake. Online, the ticks are saved; on paper, the PDF puts the answers at the back.

  12. Grandma’s shopping list: a bar of soap KSh 120, a loaf of bread KSh 65 and a packet of milk KSh 60. (a) What is the total cost? (b) What change does she get from a KSh 500 note? (c) How many cents are in KSh 3?
Show answers: Mathematics
  1. Place value: thousands; total value: 7,000. 806 is eight hundred and six.
  2. 97, 709, 790, 970. 384 rounded to the nearest ten is 380 (the ones digit, 4, is less than 5).
  3. 2,478 + 1,365 = 3,843 books.
  4. 4,305 − 2,768 = 1,537 seedlings (check: 2,768 + 1,537 = 4,305).
  5. 34 × 23 = 680 + 102 = 782 chairs.
  6. 87 ÷ 4 = 21 remainder 3: 21 sweets each, 3 left over (check: 4 × 21 = 84, and 84 + 3 = 87).
  7. (a) 11 ÷ 4 = 2 remainder 3, so 2 3/4. (b) 1 × 5 + 2 = 7, so 7/5.
  8. (a) 0.7 and 0.35. (b) 0.4 is bigger: 0.4 is the same as 0.40, and 40 hundredths is more than 38 hundredths.
  9. (a) 6b. (b) x + 4.
  10. (a) 3 m = 300 cm, so 345 cm. (b) 8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26 m.
  11. From 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. is 1 hour; 8:45 a.m. to 9:10 a.m. is 25 minutes. Total: 1 hour 25 minutes.
  12. (a) 120 + 65 + 60 = KSh 245. (b) 500 − 245 = KSh 255. (c) KSh 1 = 100 cents, so 300 cents.

Getting Ready for Grade 5

In Grade 5, Mathematics moves on to numbers in the hundreds of thousands, millilitres and grams, and English adds the future tense with “will” and “shall”. Read our Grade 5 guide and school-based assessment explained: the Grade 4 and 5 tasks count towards the KPSEA score in Grade 6. For quick practice that marks itself, try the Grade 4 CBC Challenge.
