  3. Get your marks. You get a private link and an email with the score, strengths, fixes and an improved opening.

What the essay is marked on

Every essay is scored out of 20 on four criteria, the same things teachers look for in a composition or insha.

CriterionMarksWhat it checks
Content5Relevance to the title, ideas, creativity and detail
Organisation5Introduction, paragraphs, flow and conclusion
Language5Vocabulary, sentence variety, idioms and expressions (methali na nahau for insha)
Mechanics5Spelling, punctuation, grammar and tenses

What you get back

  • A score out of 20 with a mark for each criterion
  • 3 strengths, so the learner knows what to keep doing
  • 3 specific fixes, quoting their own words where it helps
  • A corrected, stronger version of their opening paragraph

Kiswahili insha feedback is written in Kiswahili.

Why get essays marked before exams

Writing is the part of English and Kiswahili papers that learners practise least, because someone has to read and mark every essay. One marked essay a week shows a learner exactly where marks are lost: a weak opening, missing paragraphs or repeated spelling mistakes. Pair it with the Grade 9 English revision papers, the Grade 9 Kiswahili revision papers and KJSEA practice papers. For full practice access see pricing.
