How Our Online Version Works
Section A is the same as the real paper. In the real Section B, learners write answers: they explain, describe, give reasons and sometimes interpret a map or table. We cannot mark free writing automatically, so our Section B uses eight calculation questions worth 5 marks each and twelve short-answer questions with options worth 3 to 4 marks each, testing the same content. After marking, each answer comes with the explanation a written answer should contain. Practise turning those explanations into full sentences.
Topics Covered
- Natural and built environments: map scale and distance, contours, weather instruments, relief rainfall, mean temperature and diurnal range, and time and longitude.
- Resources and the environment: soda ash at Magadi, geothermal power at Olkaria, forest conservation and soil erosion.
- People and history: Fort Jesus, Great Zimbabwe and ancient Egypt, and Kenya becoming a republic in 1964.
- Governance and citizenship: the 2010 Constitution, 47 counties, arms of government, governors and senators, the IEBC, the Supreme Court, devolved functions, the Bill of Rights, citizens’ responsibilities, national symbols and acquiring citizenship.
- Economic development: exports and the trade balance, the SGR, cottage industries, population growth, the EAC and careers.
Writing Good Section B Answers
Marks in written Social Studies answers are given per relevant point, so a question worth 4 marks wants four separate, clear points, not one long paragraph. Start each point with the key idea (“Counties provide health services…”) and add a short example from Kenya. Command words matter: “state” needs a brief point; “explain” needs a point and a reason; “describe” needs features or steps.
Calculations Worth Easy Marks
- Map distance: map length × scale denominator, then convert cm to km (÷ 100,000).
- Time and longitude: 15° = 1 hour, so time difference = degrees ÷ 15.
- Diurnal range = maximum − minimum temperature; mean = total ÷ number of days.
- Population growth: add the percentage increase to the original figure.
- Trade deficit = imports − exports, when imports are larger.
Common Mistakes
- Mixing up the Senate (one senator per county) and the National Assembly.
- Confusing independence (1963) with becoming a republic (1964).
- Forgetting unit conversions in map work.
- Listing points without explaining them when the question says “explain”.
