What Our Practice Paper Covers

Pre-Technical Studies brings together workshop safety, materials and tools, technical drawing, computer skills and business basics in one learning area. Our paper follows the KICD Grade 9 strands:

  • Safety: protective equipment, electrical fires, electric shock first response and safety sign colours and shapes.
  • Materials: hardwoods and softwoods, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, conductors and thermoplastics versus thermosets.
  • Tools and joints: saws, try squares, tool care and mitre joints.
  • Technical drawing: line types, orthographic views, isometric angles and scale.
  • ICT and digital citizenship: input devices, strong passwords, antivirus software and safe social media use.
  • Energy, entrepreneurship and careers: solar power, budgets, capital, saving, profit and technical careers.

The real 912/1 mixes multiple-choice and structured questions answered in writing. Our version marks options and typed numeric answers, then shows the working so your child can compare it with what they would write.

Five Ideas That Come Up Again And Again

Safety sign colours. Red circle with a bar: prohibited. Blue circle: you must do it. Yellow triangle: warning. Green rectangle: safe condition or first aid. Learn these four and you can answer any safety-sign question.

Line types. Thick continuous lines for visible outlines, dashed lines for hidden details and thin chain lines for centre lines.

Scale. On a 1 : 10 drawing, divide the real size by 10. On a 2 : 1 drawing, double it.

Profit. Work out profit per item first, then multiply by the number sold. Show both steps, because method marks are given.

Energy. Change watts to kilowatts (divide by 1,000) before multiplying by hours to get kilowatt-hours.

Common Mistakes

  • Saying water can be used on electrical fires.
  • Calling cypress or pine a hardwood because it feels hard. The classification is botanical.
  • Using a tenon saw for curves instead of a coping saw.
  • Forgetting to convert watts to kilowatts in energy calculations.

Pacing 100 Minutes

Allow about 50 minutes for the 30 multiple-choice questions and about 40 minutes for the five calculations, leaving ten minutes to check. Read drawing questions slowly. Many depend on one word such as hidden, centre or visible.

Free Questions And Full Access

The first five questions, on workshop safety and materials, are free for everyone. Learner members unlock all 35 questions, the 1 hour 40 minute timer and every explanation. Membership is free for 7 days, then KES 500 a month.
