Exam-week Day 2 of 7 (Tuesday 20 October 2026). Ten Grade 9 English questions in about 15 minutes: a news-style passage about a matatu stage in Kerugoya, a four-line stanza, and five grammar-in-use items. Built for KJSEA pitch. KJSEA starts on Monday 26 October.

About this paper

Tell a classmate: “Day 2 of 7: 10 KJSEA English questions on CBC Guides.” Missed Day 1? Do the Day 1 Grade 9 Maths mini-paper. Next is Day 3: Grade 9 Integrated Science (Wednesday 21 October). Longer practice: Grade 9 English Papers 1 and 2.

What This Mini-Paper Covers

Questions 1 to 3 go beyond finding facts. They ask for the main idea, what a speaker means, and why the writer added a paragraph, which is the interpretation and evaluation work in the Grade 9 English design. Questions 4 and 5 are on poetry: the persona (who is speaking) and which lines rhyme. Questions 6 to 10 cover the past perfect, complex prepositions such as in spite of, comparing adverbs, the homophones principal and principle, and ordinal numbers used as determiners.

Reading Questions That Ask “Why”

When a question asks why the writer included a part of the text, think about what the text would lose without it. Take away the last paragraph of the Kerugoya passage and the report becomes one-sided praise. That is your clue. Wrong choices for “main idea” questions usually do one of two things: they blow up a small detail (two stolen bins) or they add something the passage never says (a new law).

Poetry In Two Steps

First, find the persona. Look for “I” or “we” and ask who that is. In this stanza, the borehole speaks. Second, check sound: read the last word of each line aloud and mark lines that rhyme with the same letter. Simple patterns such as abcb are common in short poems.

Grammar Traps

  • Two past actions: the earlier one takes had + past participle (had carried).
  • In spite of shows contrast; because of shows cause. Check which one the sentence really means.
  • Adverbs ending in -ly compare with more and most: more fluently, most fluently.
  • A principal runs a school; a principle is a rule you live by.

After You Finish

Pick the one question you are least sure about, even if you got it right, and explain the answer to someone in two sentences. Then sit one comprehension section from a full Grade 9 English practice paper under the timer. KJSEA dates and structure are on KJSEA past papers.

A Grade 6 learner at home can use the Day 2 Grade 6 English mini-paper instead. Back to the exam-week hub.
