About This Exam
Social Studies in junior school brings together geography, history, citizenship and personal development. Grade 7 end-of-term exams are set by schools and publishers, so formats vary. Our exam uses one-mark multiple-choice questions written from the KICD Grade 7 curriculum design, which prepares your child for the Grade 9 KJSEA Social Studies paper. Many school exams also include short written answers. Use the explanations in our review as models for writing two-sentence answers.
Topics Covered
- Personal development: teamwork and SMART goal setting.
- Maps: the key, compass directions and using a scale.
- The Earth and the solar system: the planets, rotation, the Equator and the Prime Meridian.
- Weather and physical features: Kenya’s rainy seasons, the rain gauge, Mount Kenya, the Great Rift Valley and the Tana River.
- History: oral sources and archaeology, early humans and fire, Koobi Fora, early farming, and Kenyan communities such as the Luo and Mijikenda.
- Citizenship and governance: the national ID, the flag, the President, MCAs and wards, children’s rights and peaceful conflict resolution.
- Resources and the environment: natural resources, forest conservation and soil erosion.
How To Help Your Child Revise
Use a real map. A Kenya map on the wall makes rivers, mountains, lakes and counties stick far better than lists. Ask your child to find places mentioned on the news.
Link history to people. Ask grandparents how life was when they were young. That is an oral source, and it helps your child understand how historians work.
Learn the “why”. It is not enough to know that the Rift Valley exists. Your child should know it was formed by faulting. Exams increasingly ask for reasons, not just names.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing rotation (day and night) with revolution (a year and the seasons).
- Mixing up the Equator (0° latitude) and the Prime Meridian (0° longitude).
- Thinking MCAs represent constituencies. MPs represent constituencies; MCAs represent wards.
- Forgetting to convert centimetres to kilometres in scale questions (100,000 cm = 1 km).
Pacing The 60 Minutes
Two minutes per question is plenty for recall questions, so encourage your child to spend the spare time on the scale and map questions, working them out on rough paper. Read every option: Social Studies distractors are often real places or people that simply don’t fit the question.
