What The Paper Tests

Questions come from the upper primary Mathematics curriculum, Grades 4 to 6, with the most weight on Grade 6 content. Our paper covers each strand in roughly the proportions children meet in class:

  • Numbers (about a third of the paper): place value and total value up to millions, reading and writing numbers in words, rounding off, primes, GCD and LCM, fractions, decimals and percentages.
  • Measurement: length, area of rectangles and triangles, volume of cuboids, capacity in litres and millilitres, time and duration, and money problems with change.
  • Geometry: angles in a triangle and on a straight line, and lines of symmetry.
  • Algebra: simplifying expressions, substituting values and simple word equations.
  • Data handling: mean and reading bar graphs.

How To Tackle A Multiple-Choice Maths Paper

KPSEA wrong options are not random. They are the answers a child gets by making a common slip: adding instead of subtracting, forgetting to carry, or reading the hundreds digit instead of the thousands. So the safest method is to work the question out fully first, then find your answer among the options. If your answer is not there, that is a useful signal to check your working rather than pick the closest option.

Encourage your child to read the last line of a word problem first, so they know what is being asked before they meet the numbers. In question 21 of our paper, for example, the question asks for the change, not the total cost, and many children stop one step early.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing value with place: the place of 6 in 4,608,250 is hundred thousands, but its value is 600,000.
  • Adding fractions by adding the tops and the bottoms (3/4 + 1/6 is not 4/10).
  • Counting time in hundreds: 9.45 to 12.20 is not 2 hours 75 minutes. Count to the next whole hour first.
  • Mixing up perimeter (distance round) and area (space inside).
  • Forgetting the ½ in the area of a triangle.

Next Steps

After marking, list the topics of every wrong answer and practise them with the Grade 6 CBC Challenge. The Grade 6 guide explains the full curriculum, the Grade 6 revision papers page lists every paper for this grade, and our KPSEA past papers guide explains which official KNEC materials exist.
