Times are from the KNEC 2026 KPSEA timetable. Question counts follow the published specimen papers; KNEC’s printed paper is always final.

Grade 6 learners sit the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) from Monday 26 to Wednesday 28 October 2026, with a rehearsal day on Friday 23 October.

About these papers

KPSEA does not decide which junior school a child joins, but its results are combined with school-based assessment and used to monitor learning, so a calm, well-prepared sitting still matters. The good news for parents is that every KPSEA paper is multiple choice, which makes it ideal for online practice that marks itself.

What Makes KPSEA Different

KPSEA is shaded on an answer sheet with an HB pencil, not written. Each question has four options, A to D, and only one is correct. That sounds easy, but the options are designed around common mistakes: in Mathematics, the wrong answers are usually what you get if you forget to carry, mix up place value or subtract in the wrong order. A child who guesses quickly will often land on exactly those traps. Teach your child to work the question out in the space on the question paper first and only then look for the matching option.

Timing is the other skill. Thirty Mathematics questions in eighty minutes gives about two and a half minutes each, which is generous for most questions but tight if a child gets stuck. The rule we teach is simple: if a question takes more than three minutes, mark it, move on and come back at the end. An unanswered question is a guaranteed zero; a careful attempt at the end often isn’t.

How To Practise At Home

Sit one paper a day in the real time, ideally starting at 8.30 a.m. on a weekend so the routine feels familiar. When the paper is marked, go through every wrong answer with your child using the worked answer, and ask them to explain the step they missed in their own words. Children remember a mistake they have explained much better than one they have only been told about. For short, fun practice between full papers, the Grade 6 CBC Challenge gives ten questions with instant feedback.

A Note On “Past Papers”

KPSEA is still new: the first national sitting was in 2022, so only a handful of real papers exist, and KNEC shares them with schools rather than publishing them for download. Many files sold online as “KPSEA past papers 2025 with answers” are school or publisher mock exams with a new cover page. That does not make them useless, but check the marking scheme carefully, because errors are common. Our papers are clearly labelled as original practice papers, and every answer comes with the working so you can check it yourself.

See the Grade 6 guide for what each learning area covers, and the KPSEA past papers guide for which official papers exist and where to get them.
