Why This Paper Feels Big
Integrated Science brings together four subjects that children studied separately in Grades 4 to 6: Science and Technology, Agriculture, Home Science, and Physical and Health Education. Many children revise only the “science” part and are surprised by questions on netball rules, washing utensils or compost. Our paper keeps the real balance so your child sees every area. With 50 questions in 100 minutes there are two minutes per question, which is comfortable as long as nobody gets stuck.
What Each Section Tests
- Science and Technology: living things, plant parts and their jobs, vertebrates and invertebrates, the heart, lungs and blood vessels, safe water, types of soil, states of matter, light, sound, friction, simple circuits, magnets and safe use of digital devices.
- Agriculture: soil conservation, legumes, compost, storage pests, domestic animals, water-saving irrigation, tools, mulching and reusing water.
- Home Science: food groups and deficiency diseases, hygiene, food safety, suitable clothing, kitchen safety, the order of washing utensils, checking expiry dates and basic first aid.
- Physical and Health Education: athletics, football, netball, rounders and swimming rules and skills, warm-ups and fitness, malaria and its prevention, vaccination, the effects of drugs, puberty and personal hygiene.
Tips For Each Section
In Science and Technology, look for the word that decides the answer: “ALL living things”, “fastest”, “most water”. In Agriculture and Home Science, many questions ask for the best or first action, so more than one option may sound reasonable; choose the one that solves the problem most directly and safely. A pan of burning oil, for example, must be covered, never doused with water. In PE and Health, learners who play games at school have an advantage, so talk through the rules of common games at home.
Common Mistakes
- Thinking the moon makes its own light.
- Mixing up arteries (away from the heart) and veins (back to the heart).
- Choosing “leave water in the sun” as a way to purify it. Filter and boil it instead.
- Confusing which nutrient prevents which disease (vitamin C prevents scurvy).
