About This Exam
Grade 4 end-of-term exams are set by schools and publishers, not KNEC, so no single format is “official”. We use 30 one-mark multiple-choice questions because that matches the style of the KPSEA Mathematics paper your child will sit in Grade 6, and because it lets us mark the paper instantly. In a school exam your child may also be asked to show working on paper. Our review shows the full working for every question so your child can see the method, not just the letter.
Topics Covered
- Numbers: place value and total value up to tens of thousands, reading and writing numbers in words, rounding, odd and even numbers, and number patterns.
- Operations: addition and subtraction with regrouping, multiplication by one and two digits, division with and without remainders, and word problems.
- Fractions: comparing, adding fractions with the same denominator and finding a fraction of a quantity.
- Measurement: length, mass and capacity conversions, perimeter and area of rectangles and squares, money and time.
- Geometry and data: shapes, right angles and reading simple tables.
Three Skills That Lift Grade 4 Maths Scores
Reading the question twice. Many Grade 4 mistakes come from answering a different question. “How much change?” needs a subtraction after the total is found. Teach your child to underline the question word before working.
Place value. The value of 6 in 46,215 is 6,000, not 6. Using a place-value chart (ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, ones) at home makes this click.
Units. 1 metre = 100 centimetres, 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams, 1 litre = 1,000 millilitres. Converting before calculating avoids most measurement errors.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting to carry or borrow in column addition and subtraction.
- Mixing up perimeter (distance around) and area (space inside).
- Comparing fractions by the bottom number only, thinking 1/8 is bigger than 1/4.
- Reading 1 hour 30 minutes as 130 minutes.
Pacing The 60 Minutes
Thirty questions in an hour gives two minutes each. Encourage your child to use rough paper for every calculation, skip a question that is taking too long, and come back to it at the end. The last five minutes are for checking answers, not for rushing.
Free Questions And Full Access
Anyone can try the first five questions, which cover place value and rounding, and see how the paper works. Learner members unlock all 30 questions, timed mode with a 60-minute countdown, and the full review with working for every question. Results are saved, so you can see whether your child’s score rises on the second attempt. Membership is free for 7 days, then KES 500 a month, and you can cancel at any time.
Next Steps
After marking, practise the topics of each wrong answer in the Grade 4 CBC Challenge. More exams are on the Grade 4 revision papers page, and the Grade 4 guide explains the whole curriculum.
