About This Exam

Science and Technology is a learning area in Grade 4 and Grade 5 under the CBC. In Grade 6 it is assessed in KPSEA as part of Integrated Science. School and publisher end-of-term exams differ in format, so we use 30 one-mark multiple-choice questions, close to the KPSEA style. Every question comes from a strand in the KICD Grade 4 curriculum design. The review explains why each answer is right, which matters more in science than remembering a letter.

Topics Covered

  • Living things: living and non-living things, parts of a plant and their jobs, tap and fibrous roots, medicinal plants, vertebrates and invertebrates, how animals move and what they eat.
  • The human body: the sense organs, milk teeth and caring for teeth.
  • The environment: sources of water, saving water and making it safe, types of soil, earthworms, weather instruments and disposing of waste.
  • Energy and force: sources of light, heat and sound, clean cooking fuels, pushes and pulls, and magnets.
  • Technology and safety: digital devices, safe screen use and personal safety.

How To Help Your Child Revise Science

Use what is around the house. Pull up a weed and a bean seedling and compare the roots. Put a magnet near spoons, buttons and paper clips. Boil water and talk about why. Children remember what they have seen far better than lists in a book.

Ask “why?” If your child says a fish lives in water, ask what helps it breathe there. Explaining is what the CBC calls a competency, and it is what turns a guess into a sure answer.

Learn the key words. Herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, vertebrate and invertebrate appear in almost every Grade 4 science exam. A small word list on the fridge helps.

Common Mistakes

  • Thinking the moon makes its own light; it reflects the sun’s light.
  • Mixing up tap roots (beans) and fibrous roots (maize and grass).
  • Believing a magnet attracts all metals or any shiny object.
  • Calling a spider or earthworm an animal with a backbone.

Pacing The 60 Minutes

Two minutes per question is generous for this paper. Encourage your child to read every option before choosing, because science questions often include one answer that is nearly right.

Free Questions And Full Access

The first five questions, on living things and plant parts, are free for everyone. Learner members unlock all 30 questions, timed mode, and an explanation for every answer, including the wrong options, so your child understands why a spider is not a vertebrate or why a mirror does not make its own light. Results are saved so you can track progress. Membership is free for 7 days, then KES 500 a month.
