Boarding vs Day School Costs in Kenya 2026: A Parent’s Comparison

For many families, the biggest decision after senior school placement is not which school but boarding or day. The fee gap is clear: public day senior schools charge parents nothing, while public boarding schools may charge up to KSh 53,554 a year. But fees are only part of the cost. This guide compares the two honestly, using the official fee structure and real published school charges. It includes a worksheet so you can plug in your own numbers rather than relying on guesses. It is current as of October 2026.

Source: Gazette Notice No. 1449 of 2026. The three-year totals are our arithmetic and assume the ceilings stay unchanged. The Education CS has said the higher ceiling applies to boarding schools in major urban centres and the lower one to all other boarding schools (Tuko, reporting the CS’s statement). See senior school fees 2026 for the vote heads.

Costs Outside the Gazetted Fee

Both options carry costs the gazette does not cover. They fall differently.

Costs that are higher for day learners

  • Daily transport. Matatu fare, boda boda or a school bus, every school day, roughly 13 weeks a term.
  • Lunch. The Ministry’s senior school guidelines describe lunch in day schools as provided “on voluntary basis”, paid by parents who choose it (MoE guidelines, section 7.3.1). The alternative is packed lunch from home.
  • Breakfast, supper and study space at home. These are household costs, but real ones.

Costs that are higher for boarders

  • The boarding fee itself. Up to KSh 53,554 a year.
  • The “shopping” list. A mattress, bedding, a box, toiletries and similar items, bought once and topped up each term.
  • Travel at opening, half-term and closing. This can be large if the school is in another county.
  • Visiting days and pocket money.
  • Boarding uniform extras. Many schools ask boarders for more sets. For example, the 2026 fee structure of Mambrui Secondary School, a private school in Kilifi, prices one set of uniform at KSh 3,000 for boy boarders and KSh 1,500 for boy day scholars (school fee structure 2026).

Your Budget Worksheet

We do not publish “average” transport or shopping costs because they vary enormously by county and school, and we will not invent them. Fill in your own figures instead:

Item (per year)Day school (KSh)Boarding school (KSh)
Gazetted parent fee053,554 or 40,535 (ask the school)
Uniform (as priced by the school)…………
Shopping list / bedding–……
Transport (daily fares × school days, or trips × fare)…………
Lunch (if you opt in) or packed lunch……–
Pocket money and visiting days…………
Any approved levy (ask for the approval letter)…………
Total…………

Ask each school for its admission letter or joining instructions. These list the uniform and shopping items the school expects. Compare like with like.

Beyond Money: What Else to Weigh

FactorDay schoolBoarding school
Study timeDepends on home environment and commute lengthStructured prep time in school
Supervision and safetyParent oversight every evening; risks on the daily commuteSchool supervision 24/7; less daily contact with family
IndependenceBuilds graduallyBuilds quickly; some children struggle at first
Pathway choiceMost day schools offer two pathwaysMore schools to choose from, including C1 schools with all three pathways
Fee arrearsNo fees to fall behind onThe MoE guidelines say schools may agree a signed payment plan and must not send students away for non-payment of boarding fees

The fee-arrears row reflects the MoE guidelines, section 7.6, which cite the Basic Education Act. If a school threatens to send your child home over boarding fees, ask about a payment plan in writing.

Making the Choice at Placement Time

In Grade 9 your child lists nine boarding schools and three day schools in your home sub-county (The Star). Treat the day schools as genuine options, not afterthoughts. Visit them, ask about pathways and results, and check the commute at 7 a.m. If boarding is a stretch, look at bursaries and scholarships before you rule it out. Some cover boarding fees, transport and shopping in full.

Private Boarding Is a Different Scale

Private boarding schools set their own fees, which are usually far above the public ceilings. As one published example, Riara Springs Girls’ Boarding Senior School in Nairobi lists KSh 245,000 per term for Grade 10 in 2026, inclusive of boarding (school fee structure).
