What This Practice Covers

Paper 1 traditionally draws on mechanics and properties of matter, along with topics such as heat, light, magnetism, electrostatics, cells and waves. Our paper includes measurement with the vernier calliper, density, pressure in liquids and solids, the particulate nature of matter, adhesion and cohesion, thermal expansion and heat transfer, moments and stability, uniform acceleration, Hooke’s law, work, power and machines, the gas laws, plane mirrors, magnetism, the gold-leaf electroscope, accumulators, waves and simple circuits. In the real exam you write answers and show working. Here the concepts are tested with options and the calculations with a typed final answer, and every item shows the reasoning or working a marking scheme would expect.

The Formulae You Must Know Cold

  • Density and pressure: ρ = m/V; P = F/A for solids; P = ρgh in liquids.
  • Moments: clockwise moments = anticlockwise moments about the pivot, with distances measured from the pivot.
  • Motion: a = (v − u)/t; v² = u² + 2as; s = ut + ½at².
  • Hooke’s law: F = ke, valid only up to the elastic limit.
  • Work, power and machines: W = Fd; P = W/t; MA = load/effort; efficiency = MA/VR × 100%.
  • Gas laws: P₁V₁/T₁ = P₂V₂/T₂, with temperatures in kelvin.
  • Circuits: V = IR; series resistances add; for two in parallel, R = R₁R₂/(R₁ + R₂).

Answering Structured Physics Questions

In 232/1, marks for calculations come in stages: one for the formula, one for substitution with correct units, one for the answer. A candidate who writes only the final number risks losing marks for any slip. Write the formula first, convert units (grams to kilograms, centimetres to metres, Celsius to kelvin) before substituting, and finish with the unit. For “explain” questions, use the key physics term the syllabus uses, such as “adhesive forces”, “centre of gravity” or “random bombardment”, because markers look for it.

Common Mistakes

  • Using Celsius instead of kelvin in gas law problems.
  • Measuring distances in moment problems from the end of the rule instead of the pivot.
  • Forgetting that both mirror distances count when asked for the distance between an object and its image.
  • Adding parallel resistances as if they were in series.
  • Confusing velocity ratio, which depends only on the machine’s design, with mechanical advantage, which friction reduces.

How To Use This Paper

Sit it timed, then work through every wrong answer and write the formula it needed on a revision card. Repeat after a few days. With the exams in November there is time for two or three cycles.
