What This Practice Covers, And What It Doesn’t

101/2 suits online practice best because much of it tests reading and language use. Our paper has an original passage about traders and a new footbridge (10 marks), an original poem (6 marks) and 14 grammar and vocabulary items. The real 101/2 asks for written answers in your own words, and a large section is based on an extract from a set text. We don’t reproduce set-text extracts, which are copyrighted, and written answers can’t be marked fairly by a computer. So treat this paper as training in reading accurately and using grammar precisely, then practise writing answers in full sentences with your teacher’s feedback.

Comprehension: Answering The Way Markers Want

  • Answer in your own words unless the question says “quote”. Copying whole sentences often loses marks.
  • Match the marks. A 2-mark question needs two points or a point and an explanation.
  • Tone and attitude questions need the tone word plus evidence from the text: “ironic, because the walkway is praised as ‘entirely free of traders’, which is a loss for the hawkers”.
  • Vocabulary questions want the meaning in context, in the same part of speech as the word.

Poetry And Oral Literature

Know the main devices: simile, metaphor, personification, repetition, rhyme scheme and imagery. For every device, say what it is, quote it and explain its effect. Naming it alone earns little. Describe mood changes with the stanza or line where they happen.

Grammar That Keeps Appearing

Every year 101/2 tests rewriting sentences (“No sooner had… than…”, “Hardly… when…”, the passive, reported speech), question tags, prepositions, phrasal verbs, subject–verb agreement and the order of adjectives. These are quick marks if drilled. Learn the patterns, not lists.

Pacing 101/2

The real paper gives 2 hours 30 minutes for four questions. A sensible split is about 35 minutes for comprehension, 40 for the set-text extract, 35 for oral literature or poetry and 25 for grammar, leaving time to check. Read each passage once carefully, then the questions, then return to the text for each answer.

Common Mistakes

  • “No sooner… when” instead of “No sooner… than”.
  • Forgetting to backshift tenses and change time words in reported speech.
  • Confusing affect (verb) and effect (noun).
  • Naming a poetic device without explaining its effect.
