What is in KCSE English Paper 2?
Usually four questions, 80 marks: a comprehension passage, an excerpt from a set text, a poem or oral literature piece, and grammar. Always follow the instructions printed on your own paper; layouts can change.
Topics that come up most in English Paper 2
- Comprehension: inference, vocabulary in context, rewriting sentences as instructed
- Excerpt from the compulsory set text: context, character traits, themes, style
- Poetry and oral literature: tone, rhyme scheme, persona, imagery
- Grammar: phrasal verbs, sentence transformation, reported speech, punctuation, word classes
How to answer English Paper 2 for marks
- Read the questions before the passage so you read with purpose.
- When asked for a character trait, name the trait and quote or describe the evidence from the excerpt.
- In grammar, follow the instruction exactly, for example ‘rewrite beginning with…’.
- Read every question twice and underline the command word (state, explain, describe, calculate).
- Budget time by marks: roughly one minute per mark, plus checking time.
Topic weighting: where the marks are in English Paper 2
Comprehension and the set-text excerpt usually carry the most marks, followed by poetry or oral literature and grammar. Grammar is the most predictable section to revise.
Common mistakes in KCSE English Paper 2
- Copying long passages instead of answering in your own words
- Answering a ‘what does this reveal about the character’ question with plot summary
- Ignoring the instruction ‘in about 50 words’ or ‘rewrite without changing the meaning’
- Using informal language in literary appreciation
Examiner-style tips for English Paper 2
- Quote sparingly: a few words from the excerpt as evidence is enough.
- Match the number of points to the marks: 2 marks usually means one point well explained or two short points.
- In poetry, name the feature, give the example and its effect.

How this guide differs from past-paper sites
The top Google results for KCSE English Paper 2 are mostly PDF downloads of old papers and marking schemes. Those are useful, but they rarely explain where the marks sit, what candidates get wrong or how to practise under time. This guide adds that, with original questions and a timed online challenge with instant marking.
