About This Exam
Grade 5 exams are set by schools and publishers, not KNEC. We use 30 one-mark multiple-choice questions in the style of KPSEA Mathematics, which your child will sit at the end of Grade 6, so this year is a good time to get used to it. The 70-minute time is our choice: a little longer than Grade 4, a little shorter than the 1 hour 20 minutes allowed in KPSEA Mathematics. Every answer in the review shows the full working.
Topics Covered
- Whole numbers: place value and total value up to millions, writing numbers in figures, rounding, and the four operations with large numbers.
- Factors and multiples: factors, common multiples and square numbers.
- Fractions, decimals and percentages: simplifying, subtracting fractions with different denominators, mixed numbers, fractions of quantities, adding and ordering decimals, and percentages as fractions.
- Measurement: profit and saving with money, kilometres and metres, the area of triangles and squares, volume by counting cubes, capacity, mass and the 24-hour clock.
- Geometry, algebra and data: angles in a triangle, acute angles, simple equations and the mean.
Three Skills That Lift Grade 5 Maths Scores
Equivalent fractions. To work out 3/4 − 1/8, change 3/4 to 6/8 first. Once your child sees fractions as “same size, different names”, most fraction questions become easy.
Decimal places. When adding 4.75 and 2.6, write 2.6 as 2.60 and line up the points. When ordering decimals, compare them as hundredths or thousandths.
The triangle half. The area of a triangle is half of base × height. Many learners forget the half and get double the answer, which is often one of the options.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing the place of a digit with its total value.
- Adding fractions by adding the tops and the bottoms.
- Thinking 0.606 is bigger than 0.66 because it has more digits.
- Getting the side of a square from its perimeter wrong: divide by 4, not 2.
- Writing 1530 hours as 5.30 p.m.; subtract 12 to get 3.30 p.m.
Pacing The 70 Minutes
That is a little over two minutes per question. Money and measurement word problems take longer, so your child should move quickly through the place-value questions and save time for them.
Free Questions And Full Access
The first five questions, on place value, rounding and large-number operations, are free for everyone. Learner members unlock all 30 questions, a 70-minute timed mode and full working for every answer. Saved results let you compare attempts, which is the best sign that a topic has been learned, not just an answer remembered. Membership is free for 7 days, then KES 500 a month, and you can cancel any time.
