About This Exam

Science and Technology in Grade 5 builds directly into the Integrated Science paper in KPSEA at the end of Grade 6. Schools and publishers set their own Grade 5 exams. We use 30 one-mark multiple-choice questions written from the KICD Grade 5 curriculum design, in a format close to KPSEA. The review explains the science behind every answer, so a wrong answer becomes something your child learns from.

Topics Covered

  • Living things: plant responses, parts of a flower, photosynthesis in leaves, flowering plants, reptiles, amphibians and birds.
  • The human body and health: the lungs and breathing, heart, veins and the ribcage, skin, and keeping the lungs healthy.
  • Water and soil: rainwater harvesting, making water safe, evaporation, drainage in different soils and controlling soil erosion.
  • Matter and energy: liquids and solids, melting, opaque and transparent materials, sound and vibration, conductors of heat, and uses and dangers of electricity.
  • Force, technology and the environment: gravity and friction, caring for digital devices, word processors and conserving the environment.

How To Help Your Child Revise Science

Do tiny experiments. Pour water through a little sand and a little clay and see which drains faster. Leave an ice cube in the sun. Hold a torch behind glass, paper and wood. Each one takes five minutes and answers an exam question for life.

Group things. Make a table of animals: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects. Ask your child where a frog, bat, lizard or shark goes and why. A bat is a mammal even though it flies, and a shark is a fish even though people often mix it up with whales and dolphins, which are mammals.

Link science to safety. Electricity, smoke and dirty water are science topics, but they are also everyday dangers. Children who understand why they are dangerous remember the answers.

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing up arteries (away from the heart) and veins (back to the heart).
  • Confusing evaporation and condensation.
  • Thinking clay drains water fast because it feels dry and hard.
  • Calling translucent materials transparent.

Free Questions And Full Access

The first five questions, on plant responses, flowers and animal groups, are free for everyone. Learner members unlock the full exam, timed mode and an explanation for every answer. Explanations matter in science: knowing why sandy soil drains fast also answers questions on erosion and water conservation. Results are saved so you can track progress. Membership is free for 7 days, then KES 500 a month.
