KCSE Agriculture Paper 2 Questions and Answers: Section A
1. State four signs of heat in a dairy cow. (2 marks)
Worked answer (½ mark each): mounting other cows or standing still to be mounted; clear mucus discharge from the vulva; swollen, reddish vulva; restlessness and frequent bellowing; reduced milk yield and appetite; frequent urination.
2. Name the causative agent of East Coast Fever and its vector. (1 mark)
Worked answer: the protozoan Theileria parva, spread by the brown ear tick (Rhipicephalus appendiculatus). Both parts are needed for the full mark.
3. Give four factors to consider when siting a fish pond. (2 marks)
Worked answer: reliable clean water supply; soil with enough clay to hold water; gentle slope for draining and filling; security; nearness to market; area free from flooding and pollution.
4. State two functions of the carburettor in a petrol engine. (1 mark)
Worked answer: mixes air and petrol in the correct ratio; atomises (vaporises) the fuel; regulates the amount of mixture entering the cylinder, and so the engine speed.
Section B: Structured and Diagram Questions
5. Ration calculation using the Pearson square (5 marks)
A farmer wants 100 kg of a pig ration with 18% digestible crude protein (DCP), using maize meal (8% DCP) and sunflower cake (38% DCP). Calculate the amount of each.
Working: 38 − 18 = 20 parts maize; 18 − 8 = 10 parts sunflower cake; total 30 parts. Maize = 20/30 × 100 = 66.7 kg; sunflower cake = 10/30 × 100 = 33.3 kg. Check: (66.7 × 0.08) + (33.3 × 0.38) = 5.3 + 12.7 = 18 kg DCP. The square, the subtraction and the final check each carry marks, so draw them.
6. A photograph shows a spray race. (a) State its use. (b) Give two advantages over a plunge dip. (3 marks)
Worked answer: (a) it sprays acaricide on livestock to control ticks and other external parasites. (b) uses less acaricide, since the wash is recycled; less risk of animals drowning or inhaling the chemical; easier to keep the concentration right; cheaper to fill for small herds.
Section C: Essay Practice With Marking Points
7. Describe the management of layers from point of lay to the end of the laying period. (20 marks)
Marking points (1 mark each, up to 20): move birds to the laying house before point of lay, at about 18 to 20 weeks; provide one nest box for every 4 to 5 birds; give layers’ mash ad lib with clean water at all times; provide grit and oyster shell for calcium; light for about 16 hours a day; vaccinate against Newcastle and other diseases as scheduled; deworm and control external parasites; cull poor layers and broody hens; collect eggs at least twice a day; keep litter dry and turn it; debeak to control cannibalism; keep records of feed, eggs and deaths; maintain hygiene with a foot bath at the door. Essays score best when each point is a full sentence with a reason.
8. Explain five maintenance practices for a tractor. (10 marks)
Marking points (statement + reason, 2 marks each): check oil level daily so that the engine is lubricated; clean or replace the air cleaner so dust does not wear the cylinders; top up the radiator with clean water to prevent overheating; keep tyres at the correct pressure for traction and tyre life; grease moving parts at the nipples to reduce friction; check battery water and terminals so it starts reliably; change engine oil and filters at the set hours.
