Worked answer (b): Breakfast: porridge made from millet flour with milk, and a ripe banana. Lunch: githeri (maize and beans) with sukuma wiki, and a glass of water. Supper: ugali, beef or omena stew with tomatoes and onions, cabbage, and an orange. Order matters: high to low, then floor.

Section C Practice Essay

7. (a) Explain five factors to consider when choosing a fabric for a child’s dress. (10 marks) (b) Describe how to launder a white cotton shirt. (10 marks)

Worked answer (a): Durability, because children play hard and the fabric must withstand frequent wear; ease of washing, since the dress will be washed often; absorbency, so it is comfortable in warm weather; fire safety, choosing fabrics that do not flare easily; cost, matching the family budget; colour and design that suit the child and hide dirt. Each factor stated and explained, two marks each.

Worked answer (b): Prepare: empty pockets, mend tears and remove stains. Soak in warm soapy water to loosen dirt. Wash in hot soapy water using the kneading and squeezing method, paying attention to collar and cuffs. Rinse in warm water, then in cold water until clear; add a little blue to the last rinse if needed. Starch the collar and cuffs if desired. Hang to dry in the sun, inside out, by the side seams. Iron while slightly damp with a hot iron, starting with the collar, cuffs and sleeves, then the body. Air and fold or hang.

Tips for 441/1

  • Use correct terms: “kneading and squeezing”, “blanching”, “darts”.
