| Rank | Topic | How it is usually tested |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Food tests | Starch, reducing and non-reducing sugars, proteins, lipids, vitamin C |
| 2 | Specimen identification and adaptations | Naming features of photographs or specimens and giving adaptations |
| 3 | Osmosis and enzyme experiments | Potato cylinders, visking tubing, effect of temperature or pH |

Free sample: 3 KCSE 2026 Biology Paper 3 predicted questions
Q1. Describe how to test a food sample for a reducing sugar and give a positive result.
Marking scheme
Add an equal volume of Benedict’s solution and heat in a water bath. A colour change from blue through green and yellow to orange or brick-red shows a reducing sugar.
Q2. A potato cylinder in a concentrated sugar solution becomes shorter and soft. Explain.
Marking scheme
Water leaves the cells by osmosis into the more concentrated solution, so cells become flaccid and the cylinder shrinks.
Q3. State three rules for a biological drawing.
Marking scheme
Use a sharp pencil, continuous lines, no shading; label lines that do not cross, ruled and ending on the part; include a title and magnification.
