Junior school is the middle tier of CBC: Grades 7, 8 and 9. It ends with the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), which feeds into senior school placement. For private primary schools, adding junior school keeps families for three more years. For new investors, it is a distinct segment with its own costs. This guide explains what changes when you move from primary to junior school, and how to plan for it.

What junior school demands that primary does not
- More subjects, more specialists. Learners take a broad set of learning areas, including integrated science, mathematics, English, Kiswahili, social studies, pre-technical studies, agriculture, creative arts and religious education. One class teacher cannot cover all of them, so you need subject teachers.
- Practical spaces. Integrated science and pre-technical studies need a room that can be used for practicals, with safe storage for materials and tools.
- Digital access. Computer use runs through the curriculum, so plan for devices and power.
- School-based assessment. Classroom assessment counts towards KJSEA outcomes, so assessment records must be accurate and kept for every learner.
Registration implications
Under section 76 of the Basic Education Act, offering a new level is offering basic education at that level. Speak to your County Director of Education before admitting Grade 7 learners, because the quality assurance officer will look at your facilities and teachers for that level. Every teacher must be TSC-registered, which section 50 makes a condition of registration.
Staffing plan
A lean private junior school with one stream per grade often works with five or six teachers covering paired subjects, for example mathematics with integrated science, or English with Kiswahili. Draw a timetable before hiring. It shows exactly which subject pairs you need and stops you hiring two teachers for the same gap. Our private school jobs guide shows typical pay.
Facilities on a budget
- One multipurpose lab used by both science and pre-technical studies, with a lockable store.
- A small computer corner or shared tablets with a charging cabinet.
- A garden plot for agriculture. Most schools already have the space.
Pricing junior school fees
Junior school fees are usually higher than upper-primary fees because of specialist teachers and practical materials. Check what nearby comprehensive schools charge and what parents expect. Our fees article covers parents’ views at the next level up. Be transparent: publish the fee structure, list optional extras separately, and give receipts for every payment.
Records that protect your learners
Because SBA marks feed into the KJSEA result, a lost mark sheet becomes a parent complaint, and sometimes a learner’s lost opportunity. Keep marks digitally, with a backup, and print rubric-based reports each term. See our CBC report card and SBA guide.
Systems to set up before Grade 7 opens
A junior school runs well with three tools: a subject timetable, an SBA mark book that produces report cards, and a parent communication channel. Anademy by Ananke Digital builds these to order for private schools: a timetable tool, a CBC report card generator and a parent portal. Request a demo or quote and say how many streams you plan.
A planning note: enrol Grade 7 only when the specialist teachers are hired and the practical room is equipped. Opening a grade early and catching up later is the most common cause of parent complaints in new junior schools.
