The KCSE mean grade decides which level of post-secondary programme a student can apply for through KUCCPS. This guide lists the published minimum grades for degree, diploma, certificate and artisan programmes, explains subject requirements, and covers what students can do if they fall short.

Published minimum mean grades

LevelKCSE minimum (KUCCPS)
DegreeC+ and above
Diploma (Level 6)C or C-
Craft Certificate (Level 5)D+ or D
Artisan Certificate (Level 4)E
Diploma in Primary Teacher EducationC
Diploma in Secondary Teacher EducationC+

These are the floor, not a guarantee. Each programme also lists minimum grades in specific subjects, and degree places are competitive. KUCCPS notes that only applicants who apply are considered, and that placement is on merit with an approved affirmative action criteria for gender, persons with disabilities and marginalised regions.

Subject requirements

Every programme on the KUCCPS portal shows its minimum subject requirements. For example, KMTC’s Diploma in Kenya Registered Nursing has required a mean grade of C with C in English or Kiswahili and Biology, plus C- in Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, according to KMTC’s 2026 intake advert. A student with a C mean but D+ in Biology would not qualify for that course, even though the mean grade is high enough.

Before choosing courses, write down each programme code and check every subject requirement against the result slip. KUCCPS says you can only apply for courses whose minimum requirements you satisfy.

Who can apply in a given year

For the 2026 cycle, KUCCPS stated that only 2025 KCSE graduates with C+ and above could apply for degree programmes through the portal, while students who sat KCSE between 2000 and 2025 could apply for TVET programmes at diploma, craft and artisan levels. Degree candidates from the year before selection get first priority.

Reading your result slip correctly

The mean grade on the KCSE certificate is calculated from the best seven subjects according to KNEC’s rules. When comparing with a programme’s requirements, use the grade printed for each subject, not a rounded guess. Where a requirement says “Mathematics or Physics”, meeting it in either subject is enough. Where it says “Biology/Biological Sciences”, either version counts. If a requirement is unclear, the institution’s admissions office or KUCCPS can clarify before you apply.

If you fall short

  • Progression through TVET. Many students start at certificate or diploma level and later join degree programmes, often with credit for prior study. See TVET vs university.
  • Resitting KCSE. Some students re-register as private KCSE candidates through KNEC to improve a subject.
  • Self-sponsored places. Universities admit self-sponsored students who meet their minimum entry requirements, but these places are not placed by KUCCPS and carry full fees.

Teacher training

Teaching diplomas have their own entry grades: C for the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education and C+ for the Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education, per KUCCPS. To be employed by TSC later, teachers must also register with the Commission; see our TSC recruitment guide.

And under CBC?

These grades apply to KCSE. Equivalent rules for the first CBC cohort, joining in 2029, had not been published at the time of writing; see KUCCPS placement under CBC.
