Maseno School was set up in 1906 by Church Missionary Society missionaries led by Rev. J.J. Willis, as a school for the sons of African chiefs; its first six students learnt under a tree known locally as oseno, which gave the place its name. Its sponsor today is the Anglican Church of Kenya through the Diocese of Maseno South. The motto is “Perseverance Shall Win Through”. According to its 2024 financial statements tabled in Parliament, it had 3,300 students in 15 streams at 30 June 2024. Old boys named by the Kenya News Agency include Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Raila Odinga and historian Bethwell Ogot. The school marked 120 years in 2026, according to the Kenya News Agency profile of the school.
Results, Campus and Alumni
Maseno had a big year in KCSE 2025. The Star and Nation reported that 805 candidates sat the exam and scored 89 straight As, up from 35 the year before. Twenty-four of them reached the maximum 84 points, and there were 241 A-minuses. The mean rose from 9.7 to 9.8335, and 775 candidates qualified for direct university entry. The dean of studies called it the school’s best result since 2015.
Sport is a big part of school life. The Standard reported that Maseno defended its Kisumu County rugby 15s and sevens titles, and that its 2024 rugby team averaged a B in KCSE. The school also runs an aviation programme, introduced in 2002. With more than 800 candidates a year, it is one of the larger C1 boys’ schools.
The Kenya News Agency’s 120th-anniversary feature lists further old boys: Barack Obama Sr, freedom fighter Achieng Oneko, entomologist Prof. Thomas Odhiambo, historian Bethwell Ogot and Festo Olang’, the first African Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya. The agency also reported that some of the school’s historic buildings will be preserved during redevelopment.
Its 2024 financial statements say it was registered in September 1906 as a three-stream school. By 2024 it had grown to 15 streams.
