With schools closing for the long holiday, many parents are searching for the 2027 school term dates to plan fees, travel and childcare. Several websites already show full 2027 calendars. Some are projections based on the 2026 pattern, not official circulars. This guide separates what has been reported from what is still unconfirmed, as of late October 2026.

What Has Been Reported
- Term 1 2027 opening: education news outlets, including The Kenya Times report on the December holiday, say that schools will reopen on Monday 4 January 2027, after the long holiday that began in late October 2026. Treat this as the planning date until the official circular confirms it.
- Planned change to term lengths: on 10 June 2026, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the Ministry would rationalise the school calendar (The Standard) so that all three terms run for about 12 weeks, replacing the current uneven pattern. He said this would apply from the next academic year, 2027.
Why the 2027 Calendar May Look Different
The 2026 calendar had a long first term of 13 weeks, a 14-week second term and a short nine-week third term. Our 2026 term dates page shows these in full. If the Ministry moves to roughly equal 12-week terms, the April and August holidays, half-term breaks and Term 3 closing date will all shift. Any 2027 calendar that simply copies the 13/14/9 pattern may turn out to be wrong.
What Is Not Yet Confirmed
- Term 1, 2 and 3 closing dates.
- Half-term break dates.
- The April and August holiday dates.
- National assessment dates for KPSEA, KJSEA and KCSE in 2027, which the Kenya National Examinations Council sets.
The Ministry normally publishes the next year’s calendar through a circular in the last quarter of the year; in late October 2026 Education News reported that families were still awaiting the official 2027 dates. Official circulars appear on the Ministry of Education website at education.go.ke.
How to Plan Before the Circular Comes Out
- Fees: budget for Term 1 fees to be due by early January. Term 1 is usually the largest instalment, so start setting money aside now. Our fee calendar tool helps.
- Travel: avoid non-refundable bookings close to the start of January until dates are confirmed.
- Grade 10 joiners: learners who sat KJSEA in 2026 should watch for placement and reporting information, which may follow its own schedule. See our guide on Grade 10 admission letters and reporting.
- Private schools: most follow the national calendar, but some international schools use their own term dates. Check with your school directly.
How to Spot an Unofficial Calendar
Ask where the dates came from. A trustworthy page names the circular, its date and the issuing office. If a page gives exact half-term dates for 2027 but cites no source, treat it as a guess.
Use the Holiday Well
While you wait, the long holiday is a good time for light, regular revision. Our long holiday revision plan sets out a week-by-week approach, and the revision papers cover every grade. We will update our term dates page as soon as the official 2027 circular is published.
Questions to Ask Your School
Before the holiday ends, ask your school for its own Term 1 letter. It should confirm the reporting date, fee deadline, any items to bring, and whether boarders report on a different day from day scholars. Schools usually issue this once the national circular is out.
