Artisan, Certificate and Diploma Courses in Kenya: TVET Levels Explained

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) has grown into a major route for Kenyan school leavers. Yet many parents are unsure how the qualifications fit together, or which level their child can join. This guide explains the main TVET levels, the usual entry grades, and how a learner can climb from an artisan course all the way to a degree.

The Main TVET Levels

  • Artisan certificate: a practical, hands-on course focused on a specific trade, such as plumbing, masonry, hairdressing or motor vehicle mechanics. It is the entry point for learners with lower KCSE grades.
  • Craft certificate: a step up from artisan level, with more theory alongside practical skills.
  • Diploma: a higher technical qualification, usually taking about three years, in fields such as electrical engineering, ICT, accounting, nursing-related technical areas and hospitality.
  • Higher diploma: advanced study for diploma holders, often with work experience.

Minimum KCSE Grades

For government-sponsored placement through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), the commonly used minimum entry grades are:

  • Diploma (Level 6): mean grade C− (minus).
  • Craft certificate (Level 5): mean grade D (plain).
  • Artisan certificate (Level 4): mean grade E.

These match the bands in a KUCCPS guide to TVET programmes: C and C- for diploma, D+ and D for craft certificate, D- and below for artisan. The degree minimum is C+ (plus), and some diplomas, such as teacher education, ask for more. KUCCPS placement in TVET is open to earlier years too: the 2026 KUCCPS application window covered anyone who sat KCSE from 2000 to 2025, though the same TVET guide says the latest cohort gets priority.

Individual courses can set higher subject requirements, for example a minimum grade in Mathematics for engineering courses. Always check the specific course on the KUCCPS portal. Our page on KCSE minimum grades covers degree requirements in more detail.

Where TVET Courses Are Offered

  • National polytechnics: large public institutions offering many diploma and higher diploma courses.
  • Technical and vocational colleges (TVCs) and technical training institutes: public colleges spread across counties.
  • Vocational training centres (VTCs): run by county governments, focusing mainly on artisan and craft trades.
  • Private TVET colleges: these should be licensed by the TVET Authority (TVETA). Check the TVETA list of accredited institutions before paying.

How Progression Works

TVET is not a dead end. A learner can move from artisan to craft certificate, then to diploma. Many universities admit diploma holders to related degree programmes, sometimes with credit for work already done. This means a learner with a modest KCSE grade can still reach a degree, often with valuable practical skills and work experience along the way.

TVET and the CBC Pathways

Under CBC, senior school learners choose a pathway: STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts and Sports Science. Technical tracks in senior school connect naturally with TVET courses later. See our TVET vs university guide and CBC pathways explainer for how the two systems line up.

Choosing a Course

  • Start with your child’s strengths and interests, not just the grade.
  • Look at local job demand: trades like electrical installation, plumbing and ICT support are needed across Kenya.
  • Visit the institution, ask about workshops and equipment, and ask how many students complete attachment placements.
  • Confirm who examines the course, so the certificate is recognised.

Apply Through KUCCPS

Government-sponsored TVET places are applied for through the KUCCPS portal. Our step-by-step guide on applying on the KUCCPS portal walks you through it. For current senior school learners, strong revision now keeps more options open; the revision papers and tools on cbcguide can help.
