How Geography Paper 1 (312/1) Is Organised

Paper 1 is physical geography, 2 hours 45 minutes long and marked out of 100. Section A has five short compulsory questions worth 25 marks. In Section B, question 6 is compulsory and is normally map work on a 1:50,000 topographical map of a part of Kenya; you then choose two of the remaining four questions. Each Section B question carries 25 marks. If the paper refers to a map that you have not been given, KNEC instructions tell you to inform the supervisor at once.

TopicWhat is commonly asked
The earth and solar systemStructure of the earth, effects of rotation and revolution
Weather and climateInstruments, climatic regions, mean and range calculations
Rocks, minerals and internal processesFolding, faulting, the Rift Valley, vulcanicity, earthquakes
External processesWeathering, mass wasting, rivers, lakes, oceans, glaciation, arid landforms
Soils, vegetation, statistics and fieldworkSoil profile, vegetation zones, field study objectives and methods
Map workScale, area, grid references, bearings, relief and drainage

Geography improved significantly in the 2024 KCSE, one of 17 subjects to do so according to the Education Cabinet Secretary as reported by People Daily’s 2024 KCSE subject performance report.

KCSE Geography Paper 1 Questions and Answers (Original Practice)

1. State three effects of the rotation of the earth. (3 marks)

Answer: Causes day and night; causes a time difference of four minutes per degree of longitude; deflects winds and ocean currents (the Coriolis effect); causes daily rise and fall of tides. Any three.

2. The table shows original temperature data for a station. Calculate the annual range and the mean annual temperature. (4 marks)

Answer: Annual range = highest − lowest = 25 − 18 = 7 °C. Total = 265; mean = 265 ÷ 12 = 22.1 °C. Marks are lost for leaving out the unit.

3. Describe how a block mountain forms through tensional forces. (4 marks)

Answer: Tensional forces pull the crust apart; two or more normal faults develop roughly parallel to each other; the land outside the faults sinks, or the central block is pushed up; the central block stands above the surrounding land as a block mountain or horst, such as the Aberdare Ranges.

4. Give four factors that influence the rate of chemical weathering. (4 marks)

Answer: Climate (high temperature and rainfall speed it up); rock type and mineral composition; vegetation cover, which produces organic acids; relief and drainage; time of exposure. Any four.

5. Name three features of river deposition in the lower course. (3 marks)

Answer: Flood plains; levees; deltas; ox-bow lakes; braided channels. Any three.

Map-Work Practice (Question 6 Style)

6. On a 1:50,000 map, a road measures 7.4 cm. (a) Convert this to kilometres. (b) A forest covers 9 full grid squares and about 6 half squares. Estimate its area. (c) Explain why bearings are given in three figures.

Worked answer: (a) 1 cm represents 50,000 cm = 0.5 km, so 7.4 × 0.5 = 3.7 km. (b) Each grid square on a 1:50,000 map is 1 km², so the area ≈ 9 + 6 × ½ = 12 km². (c) To avoid confusion between bearings and to give an exact direction from 000° to 360° measured clockwise from north.

Other map items almost always include a six-figure grid reference, the height of a feature from contours, the drainage pattern, and relating relief to settlement or land use. Practise each on any Kenyan topographical map.

Fieldwork Questions Are Free Marks

Many Section B questions end with a fieldwork part. Learn a ready framework: objectives (what you want to find out), hypothesis, preparation (permission, a route map, a questionnaire), methods of data collection (observation, interviewing, measuring, photographing, sampling), and follow-up activities (writing a report, drawing graphs, class discussion). Adapt it to the topic in the question, such as weathering or a river.
