Q1. Name CH₃CH₂CH₂OH and give the product when it reacts with ethanoic acid in the presence of concentrated sulphuric(VI) acid.

Marking scheme

Propan-1-ol. It forms the ester propyl ethanoate (and water).

Q2. A current of 2 A is passed through copper(II) sulphate solution for 30 minutes. Find the mass of copper deposited (Cu = 63.5, 1F = 96,500 C).

Marking scheme

Q = 2 × 1,800 = 3,600 C. Cu²⁺ needs 2F per mole, so mass = 3,600/193,000 × 63.5 ≈ 1.18 g.

Q3. A radioactive isotope has a half-life of 8 days. What fraction remains after 24 days?

Marking scheme

24/8 = 3 half-lives, so (1/2)³ = 1/8 remains.
