What is in KCSE Chemistry Paper 2?
About 7 longer structured questions, all compulsory, 80 marks. Always follow the instructions printed on your own paper; layouts can change.
Topics that come up most in Chemistry Paper 2
- Organic chemistry: alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, carboxylic acids, polymers
- Electrochemistry and electrolysis
- Energy changes in reactions
- Rates of reaction and equilibrium
- Metals and their extraction, nitrogen, sulphur and chlorine compounds
How to answer Chemistry Paper 2 for marks
- Learn the flow charts for industrial processes such as the Haber and Contact processes.
- Use a ruler for graphs and label axes with units.
- Name organic compounds using IUPAC rules.
- Read every question twice and underline the command word (state, explain, describe, calculate).
- Budget time by marks: roughly one minute per mark, plus checking time.
Topic weighting: where the marks are in Chemistry Paper 2
Seven or so longer questions cover the heavier topics. Organic chemistry and electrochemistry are near-certain; industrial processes and rates often appear in the same question with a graph.
Common mistakes in KCSE Chemistry Paper 2
- Drawing organic structures with the wrong number of bonds on carbon
- Mixing anode and cathode products in electrolysis
- Graphs without labelled axes and units
- Learning flow charts without the conditions (temperature, catalyst, pressure)
Examiner-style tips for Chemistry Paper 2
- Count bonds: each carbon must have four.
- Use the electrochemical series to predict products and explain choices.
- In energy questions, include the sign of ΔH and units (kJ/mol).
KCSE Chemistry Paper 2 questions and answers (practice)
These are original practice questions written for revision, not KNEC papers.
Question 1
Name CH3CH2OH and state one use.
Answer: Ethanol; used as a fuel or solvent.
Question 2
State the effect of increasing pressure on the yield of ammonia in the Haber process.
Answer: Yield increases, because the forward reaction produces fewer gas molecules.
Question 3
Name the product at the cathode when dilute sulphuric acid is electrolysed with inert electrodes.
Answer: Hydrogen gas.
Question 4
Give the general formula of alkenes.
Answer: CₙH₂ₙ.
Question 5
State one way to increase the rate of a reaction between marble chips and acid.
Answer: Use powdered marble to increase surface area.

On the day of Chemistry Paper 2
Wednesday 4 November 2026, 8.00 to 10.00 am. Be seated 15 minutes early. Carry blue or black pens, a pencil, a ruler and a rubber, a mathematical set and an approved non-programmable calculator. Read the whole paper in the first five minutes and mark the questions you will answer first. Leave the last ten minutes to check your answers and that your index number is on every page you hand in.
Three-day plan for Chemistry Paper 2
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 3 days before | Do a full timed practice paper and mark it. |
| 2 days before | Revise the two weakest topics from the list above and redo the questions you got wrong. |
| Night before | Take the Chemistry Paper 2 challenge once, read your mistake list, then sleep. |

How this guide differs from past-paper sites
The top Google results for KCSE Chemistry Paper 2 are mostly PDF downloads of old papers and marking schemes. Those are useful, but they rarely explain where the marks sit, what candidates get wrong or how to practise under time. This guide adds that, with original questions and a timed online challenge with instant marking.
Frequently asked questions
What is in KCSE Chemistry Paper 2?
Longer structured questions on organic chemistry, electrochemistry, energy changes, rates, equilibrium and industrial processes.
Where can I get the KCSE Chemistry Paper 2 marking scheme?
Official marking schemes are not published by KNEC for sale. Use practice papers with worked answers and the answers on this page, and be wary of anyone selling ‘marking schemes’ for the coming exam.
Are KCSE Chemistry Paper 2 leaked papers real?
No. Papers sold online before the exam are scams, and holding them is an exam irregularity that can lead to cancelled results (see KCSE exam rules).
How long is KCSE Chemistry Paper 2?
2 hours on the 2026 timetable.
Can I download the KCSE Chemistry Paper 2 2025 PDF here?
We do not host KNEC papers. Practise with original papers in the same format, with worked answers, in KCSE practice papers; schools keep past KNEC papers for their candidates.
Is there a KCSE Chemistry Paper 2 prediction for 2026?
Prediction papers are teachers’ practice papers, not the real exam. Use them like any past paper and focus on the topics listed above.
