What is in KCSE English Paper 1?
Three questions: a functional writing task (about 20 marks), a cloze passage (about 10 marks) and oral skills (about 30 marks), 60 marks in total. Always follow the instructions printed on your own paper; layouts can change.
Topics that come up most in English Paper 1
- Functional writing formats: formal and informal letters, emails, memos, minutes, reports, speeches, CVs, notices and diary entries
- Cloze test: tenses, prepositions, articles and collocations
- Oral skills: features of oral poems and tongue twisters, stress and intonation, homophones, minimal pairs, telephone and interview etiquette, note-taking and listening
How to answer English Paper 1 for marks
- Write the format first (address, date, salutation, heading) because format marks are easy marks.
- In the cloze test, read the full passage once before filling any blank, and fill one word only per blank.
- In oral skills, answer in the context of the given text and give an example for every feature you name.
- Read every question twice and underline the command word (state, explain, describe, calculate).
- Budget time by marks: roughly one minute per mark, plus checking time.
Topic weighting: where the marks are in English Paper 1
Oral skills carries the most marks (about half), functional writing about a third, cloze the rest. Functional writing is usually marked for Format, Content and Language, so format alone can earn several marks.
Common mistakes in KCSE English Paper 1
- Writing a letter format when the task asks for an email, memo or minutes
- Missing content points the question lists (venue, date, time, recommendations)
- Filling cloze blanks with two words, or the right word in the wrong tense
- Naming an oral feature without showing it in the given text
Examiner-style tips for English Paper 1
- Underline every task word in the functional question and tick each off as you write it in.
- If the question has parts (a) and (b), write two separate documents.
- For stress and intonation questions, mark the stressed word in capitals and say why it is stressed.

How this guide differs from past-paper sites
The top Google results for KCSE English Paper 1 are mostly PDF downloads of old papers and marking schemes. Those are useful, but they rarely explain where the marks sit, what candidates get wrong or how to practise under time. This guide adds that, with original questions and a timed online challenge with instant marking.
