What is in KCSE English Paper 3?
Three questions, about 20 marks each: an imaginative composition (choose from options), a compulsory essay on the main set text, and an essay from a choice of optional set texts. Always follow the instructions printed on your own paper; layouts can change.
Topics that come up most in English Paper 3
- Imaginative composition: a story ending or beginning with a given sentence, or a story illustrating a saying
- Compulsory set text essay: themes, characters and lessons
- Optional set texts: the novel, play or short story anthology your school studied
How to answer English Paper 3 for marks
- Plan for five minutes before each essay: introduction, three or four body points, conclusion.
- In set text essays, every paragraph should make one point and back it with an episode from the text.
- Keep the given sentence word for word if the question asks you to begin or end with it.
- Read every question twice and underline the command word (state, explain, describe, calculate).
- Budget time by marks: roughly one minute per mark, plus checking time.
Topic weighting: where the marks are in English Paper 3
Each of the three essays carries about the same marks, so share time equally: roughly 50 minutes per essay including planning.
Common mistakes in KCSE English Paper 3
- Changing the given opening or closing sentence
- Retelling the set text instead of arguing the question
- Writing a short essay of a page or less
- Running out of time for the third essay
Examiner-style tips for English Paper 3
- Begin set-text essays with a direct thesis that answers the question in one sentence.
- Use the names of characters and places correctly; spelling of names matters.
- End with a conclusion that ties back to the question words.

How this guide differs from past-paper sites
The top Google results for KCSE English Paper 3 are mostly PDF downloads of old papers and marking schemes. Those are useful, but they rarely explain where the marks sit, what candidates get wrong or how to practise under time. This guide adds that, with original questions and a timed online challenge with instant marking.
Frequently asked questions
How do I score an A in KCSE English Paper 3?
Answer the question asked, plan each essay, illustrate every point from the text and leave time to proofread for grammar.
Where can I get the KCSE English Paper 3 marking scheme?
Official marking schemes are not published by KNEC for sale. Use practice papers with worked answers and the answers on this page, and be wary of anyone selling ‘marking schemes’ for the coming exam.

How long is KCSE English Paper 3?
2 hours 30 minutes on the 2026 timetable.
Can I download the KCSE English Paper 3 2025 PDF here?
We do not host KNEC papers. Practise with original papers in the same format, with worked answers, in KCSE practice papers; schools keep past KNEC papers for their candidates.
Is there a KCSE English Paper 3 prediction for 2026?
Prediction papers are teachers’ practice papers, not the real exam. Use them like any past paper and focus on the topics listed above.
