A KCSE result slip shows a grade for each subject and an overall mean grade. Many parents, especially those who went through a different system, are not sure how one leads to the other. Here is a plain explanation.

The 12-point scale
Each KCSE subject is graded on twelve grades, each worth a number of points:
| Grade | Points |
|---|---|
| A | 12 |
| A- | 11 |
| B+ | 10 |
| B | 9 |
| B- | 8 |
| C+ | 7 |
| C | 6 |
| C- | 5 |
| D+ | 4 |
| D | 3 |
| D- | 2 |
| E | 1 |
The marks needed for each grade are not fixed. KNEC sets grade boundaries for each paper after marking, taking into account how hard the paper turned out to be. That is why a raw mark that earned a B one year might be a B- or B+ in another.
How the mean grade is worked out
The mean grade is based on seven subjects. Their points are added up, giving a total out of 84, and that total is converted into a mean grade. For example, 46 points or more corresponds roughly to C+ (an average of about 7 points per subject).
The rule on which seven subjects count changed for the 2023 KCSE, according to the Ministry’s 2023 KCSE grading announcement (Kenya News Agency). Before, five subjects were compulsory: Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, two sciences and one humanity. Since 2023, only Mathematics and the best-performed language (English, Kiswahili or Kenyan Sign Language) are compulsory, plus the candidate’s best five other subjects. The Ministry confirmed the 2025 results were graded this way. In practice this helps students who did well in, say, sciences or technical subjects but had one weak language. Always check the official KNEC guidance for the year, as rules can be refined.
Why the mean grade is not the whole story
The mean grade decides which level of course is open: C+ and above is the usual minimum for a degree, C- for a diploma, and D for many certificate courses (details in our minimum grades guide). But the specific course depends on cluster subjects. Medicine, engineering, law and others each require minimum grades in particular subjects. A student with a B mean grade but a weak Chemistry grade may not qualify for some health courses.
KUCCPS turns subject grades into cluster points for each programme. Our cluster points explainer walks through it, and how to use cut-off points shows how to choose realistic options.
How KCSE compares with CBC grading
If you have a child in junior school, you will meet a different system. KJSEA and CBC assessments use performance levels such as Exceeding Expectations and Meeting Expectations rather than letter grades. See CBC grading explained and what EE1, ME2 and AE1 mean. The two systems run side by side until the last KCSE in 2027, which The Standard reports KNEC treats as the final sitting.
Common questions
Can a candidate get a mean grade with missing subjects? A candidate who misses papers may have results withheld or a reduced number of subjects graded; the school can explain each case with KNEC.
What does X or Y on a slip mean? X has generally indicated an absent candidate in a subject, while Y indicates a result cancelled for an irregularity. Contact the school immediately if you see either.
Can the grade change? Only through KNEC’s official remarking process. See our remarking guide.
A worked example
Imagine a candidate with Mathematics B (9), English C+ (7), Kiswahili B- (8), Biology B (9), Chemistry C (6), History A- (11), Geography B+ (10), CRE B (9) and Agriculture C+ (7). Mathematics counts, and Kiswahili counts as the better language. The best five of the rest are History 11, Geography 10, Biology 9, CRE 9 and Agriculture 7, which is 46. Adding Maths 9 and Kiswahili 8 gives 63 out of 84, which works out at around a B. Under the old rule, both languages and two sciences would have been forced in, pulling the total down.
Want more practice before results day, or for the next exam in your house? A CBC Guides membership opens every practice paper with worked answers, the quizzes and the revision papers for KJSEA and senior school. Plans start at KSh 500 a month. See membership plans.
