What is in KCSE Mathematics Paper 1?

Section I has 16 short questions for 50 marks; Section II has 8 longer questions and you answer any 5 for 50 marks. Non-programmable calculators are allowed. Always follow the instructions printed on your own paper; layouts can change.

Topics that come up most in Mathematics Paper 1

  • Numbers: fractions, indices, logarithms, standard form, ratio and rates
  • Algebra: simplifying, quadratic equations, simultaneous equations, inequalities
  • Commercial arithmetic: profit and loss, commission, hire purchase
  • Geometry and measurement: area, volume, similarity, bearings, vectors, locus
  • Statistics and graphs, linear motion

How to answer Mathematics Paper 1 for marks

  1. Do Section I first and keep to about 1 hour.
  2. Show every step: method marks are awarded even when the final answer is wrong.
  3. In Section II, choose the five questions you can finish completely.
  4. Read every question twice and underline the command word (state, explain, describe, calculate).
  5. Budget time by marks: roughly one minute per mark, plus checking time.

Topic weighting: where the marks are in Mathematics Paper 1

Section I (16 questions) and Section II (any 5 of 8) each carry 50 marks. Section II almost always includes a graph or construction question and a commercial arithmetic question.

Common mistakes in KCSE Mathematics Paper 1

  • Losing method marks by writing only the final answer
  • Rounding too early in long calculations
  • Using the wrong scale on graphs
  • Spending too long on one Section I question

Examiner-style tips for Mathematics Paper 1

  • Write units and round only at the final step to the accuracy asked.
  • For constructions, leave construction arcs visible.
  • If a question has (a), (b), (c), part (a) is often needed for later parts, so check it.

KCSE Mathematics Paper 1 questions and answers (practice)

These are original practice questions written for revision, not KNEC papers.

Question 1

Solve 3x – 7 = 2x + 5.

Answer: x = 12.

Question 2

A trader buys a radio at KSh 2,400 and sells it at KSh 3,000. Find the percentage profit.

Answer: Profit = 600. Percentage profit = 600 ÷ 2,400 × 100 = 25%.

Question 3

Evaluate (2/3 + 1/4) ÷ 11/12.

Answer: 2/3 + 1/4 = 11/12, so 11/12 ÷ 11/12 = 1.

Question 4

Solve the simultaneous equations x + y = 7 and x – y = 1.

Answer: Adding gives 2x = 8, so x = 4 and y = 3.

Question 5

A salesperson earns 5% commission on sales above KSh 20,000. Find the commission on sales of KSh 50,000.

Answer: 5% of 30,000 = KSh 1,500.

Mathematics Paper 1 revision checklist

Tick each line only when you can do it from memory, under time:

  • I can answer an exam-style question on numbers without notes.
  • I can answer an exam-style question on algebra without notes.
  • I can answer an exam-style question on commercial arithmetic without notes.
  • I can answer an exam-style question on geometry and measurement without notes.
  • I can answer an exam-style question on statistics and graphs, linear motion without notes.
  • I have done at least one full 2 hours 30 minutes practice paper and marked it.
  • I have listed my last five mistakes and redone them correctly.

On the day of Mathematics Paper 1

Tuesday 3 November 2026, 8.00 to 10.30 am. Be seated 15 minutes early. Carry blue or black pens, a pencil, a ruler and a rubber, a mathematical set and an approved non-programmable calculator. Read the whole paper in the first five minutes and mark the questions you will answer first. Leave the last ten minutes to check your answers and that your index number is on every page you hand in.

Three-day plan for Mathematics Paper 1

How this guide differs from past-paper sites

The top Google results for KCSE Mathematics Paper 1 are mostly PDF downloads of old papers and marking schemes. Those are useful, but they rarely explain where the marks sit, what candidates get wrong or how to practise under time. This guide adds that, with original questions and a timed online challenge with instant marking.

Frequently asked questions

What topics come up most in KCSE Maths Paper 1?

Commercial arithmetic, algebra, geometry and statistics appear in most years, along with a graph or construction in Section II.

Where can I get the KCSE Mathematics Paper 1 marking scheme?

Official marking schemes are not published by KNEC for sale. Use practice papers with worked answers and the answers on this page, and be wary of anyone selling ‘marking schemes’ for the coming exam.

Are KCSE Mathematics Paper 1 leaked papers real?

No. Papers sold online before the exam are scams, and holding them is an exam irregularity that can lead to cancelled results (see KCSE exam rules).

How long is KCSE Mathematics Paper 1?

2 hours 30 minutes on the 2026 timetable.

Can I download the KCSE Mathematics Paper 1 2025 PDF here?

We do not host KNEC papers. Practise with original papers in the same format, with worked answers, in KCSE practice papers; schools keep past KNEC papers for their candidates.

Is there a KCSE Mathematics Paper 1 prediction for 2026?

Prediction papers are teachers’ practice papers, not the real exam. Use them like any past paper and focus on the topics listed above.
