What is in KCSE Mathematics Paper 2?

Same layout as Paper 1: 16 questions in Section I (50 marks) and any 5 of 8 in Section II (50 marks). Always follow the instructions printed on your own paper; layouts can change.

Topics that come up most in Mathematics Paper 2

  • Trigonometry: graphs of sine and cosine, the sine and cosine rule
  • Matrices and transformations
  • Probability and statistics: quartiles, standard deviation
  • Loci, linear programming, compound interest and depreciation
  • Longitudes and latitudes, three-dimensional geometry, calculus basics

How to answer Mathematics Paper 2 for marks

  1. Practise matrix transformations and linear programming: they reward a neat graph.
  2. Write formulas before substituting.
  3. Leave 10 minutes to check signs and units.
  4. Read every question twice and underline the command word (state, explain, describe, calculate).
  5. Budget time by marks: roughly one minute per mark, plus checking time.

Topic weighting: where the marks are in Mathematics Paper 2

Like Paper 1, 50 marks each in Sections I and II. Section II commonly includes matrices and transformations, trigonometric graphs, linear programming and statistics.

Common mistakes in KCSE Mathematics Paper 2

  • Mixing up degrees and radians or the calculator mode
  • Wrong order in matrix multiplication
  • Plotting trig graphs without a smooth curve
  • Forgetting to state the optimum point in linear programming

Examiner-style tips for Mathematics Paper 2

  • Check your calculator is in degree mode before the paper.
  • In linear programming, shade the unwanted region and label each inequality.
  • For statistics, set out a frequency table with fx and fx² columns.

KCSE Mathematics Paper 2 questions and answers (practice)

These are original practice questions written for revision, not KNEC papers.

Question 1

Find the compound interest on KSh 10,000 at 10% per year for 2 years.

Answer: Amount = 10,000 × 1.1² = 12,100. Interest = KSh 2,100.

Question 2

Find the determinant of the matrix (3 2 / 1 4).

Answer: 3 × 4 – 2 × 1 = 10.

Question 3

Find the mean of 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12.

Answer: 40 ÷ 5 = 8.

Question 4

A car worth KSh 800,000 depreciates at 10% per year. Find its value after 2 years.

Answer: 800,000 × 0.9² = KSh 648,000.

Question 5

State the transformation represented by the matrix (0 -1 / 1 0).

Answer: A rotation of 90° anticlockwise about the origin.

Mathematics Paper 2 revision checklist

Tick each line only when you can do it from memory, under time:

  • I can answer an exam-style question on trigonometry without notes.
  • I can answer an exam-style question on matrices and transformations without notes.
  • I can answer an exam-style question on probability and statistics without notes.
  • I can answer an exam-style question on loci, linear programming, compound interest and depreciation without notes.
  • I can answer an exam-style question on longitudes and latitudes, three-dimensional geometry, calculus basics without notes.
  • I have done at least one full 2 hours 30 minutes practice paper and marked it.
  • I have listed my last five mistakes and redone them correctly.

On the day of Mathematics Paper 2

Monday 9 November 2026, 8.00 to 10.30 am. Be seated 15 minutes early. Carry blue or black pens, a pencil, a ruler and a rubber, a mathematical set and an approved non-programmable calculator. Read the whole paper in the first five minutes and mark the questions you will answer first. Leave the last ten minutes to check your answers and that your index number is on every page you hand in.

Three-day plan for Mathematics Paper 2

WhenWhat to do
3 days beforeDo a full timed practice paper and mark it.
2 days beforeRevise the two weakest topics from the list above and redo the questions you got wrong.
Night beforeTake the Mathematics Paper 2 challenge once, read your mistake list, then sleep.

Practise Mathematics Paper 2 online

The KCSE Mathematics Paper 2 challenge gives timed questions with a score, a leaderboard rank and a share card. How this guide differs from past-paper sites

The top Google results for KCSE Mathematics Paper 2 are mostly PDF downloads of old papers and marking schemes. Those are useful, but they rarely explain where the marks sit, what candidates get wrong or how to practise under time. This guide adds that, with original questions and a timed online challenge with instant marking.

Frequently asked questions

Is KCSE Maths Paper 2 harder than Paper 1?

Many candidates find it harder because it has more trigonometry, matrices and calculus, so practise those first.

Where can I get the KCSE Mathematics Paper 2 marking scheme?

Official marking schemes are not published by KNEC for sale. Use practice papers with worked answers and the answers on this page, and be wary of anyone selling ‘marking schemes’ for the coming exam.

Are KCSE Mathematics Paper 2 leaked papers real?

No. Papers sold online before the exam are scams, and holding them is an exam irregularity that can lead to cancelled results (see KCSE exam rules).

How long is KCSE Mathematics Paper 2?

2 hours 30 minutes on the 2026 timetable.

Can I download the KCSE Mathematics Paper 2 2025 PDF here?

We do not host KNEC papers. Practise with original papers in the same format, with worked answers, in KCSE practice papers; schools keep past KNEC papers for their candidates.

Is there a KCSE Mathematics Paper 2 prediction for 2026?

Prediction papers are teachers’ practice papers, not the real exam. Use them like any past paper and focus on the topics listed above.
