Tutor Rates in Kenya 2026: What Private Tuition Costs per Hour

There is no official price list for private tuition in Kenya, so parents mostly learn rates from WhatsApp groups and neighbours. To give you a firmer picture, we looked at rates that tuition providers and tutor platforms actually publish online. The short answer: most one-to-one tuition for CBC and JSS learners is priced between about KSh 500 and KSh 1,000 an hour, with higher prices for senior school sciences, international curricula and experienced tutors in Nairobi.

Published rates we found (October 2026): a tuition provider charging KSh 500–600 an hour online and KSh 600–700 an hour at home; tutor platform listings mostly at KSh 500–1,000 an hour; and a business guide quoting KSh 500–3,000 an hour for Nairobi home tutors.

Rates published by a tuition provider

Elimu Plus Homeschool, which offers CBC tuition online and at home in Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos and Kajiado, publishes the following rates (elimuplus.co.ke):

LevelOnline (KSh per hour)At home (KSh per hour)
Playgroup, PP1 and PP2500600
Grade 1–6500600
Grade 7–9 (JSS)600700
Grade 10–12600700

Rates on a tutor platform

On TutorBee, a Kenyan tutor marketplace, the tutor profiles shown on the home page in October 2026 listed rates of KSh 500, 700, 800 and 1,000 an hour, for subjects from early primary to IGCSE and IB sciences, in Nairobi and Machakos (tutorbee.co.ke). Those are individual tutors’ own asking prices, not platform averages.

Ranges quoted for Nairobi

A February 2026 guide to starting a tutoring business in Kenya by Huduma Global gives wider ranges: KSh 500–3,000 an hour for Nairobi home tutors depending on subject, level and qualifications; KSh 500–2,500 an hour for online tutors; and KSh 1,000–5,000 per student per month for group classes at tuition centres (Huduma Global). It suggests KSh 500–1,500 an hour for Grade 1–6, KSh 800–2,000 for Grade 7–9 and KSh 1,000–3,000 for Grade 10–12. Treat these as an upper guide: they come from advice for tutors setting prices, not from a survey of what parents pay.

What pushes the price up or down

  • Level and subject. Senior school Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and IGCSE or IB subjects, cost more than lower primary.
  • Home versus online. Home visits cost more because the tutor travels. In the Elimu Plus price list, home lessons cost KSh 100 an hour more.
  • Location. Rates in Nairobi’s suburbs are generally higher than in smaller towns.
  • Experience. A trained teacher with exam-marking experience usually charges more than a university student.
  • Group size. Sharing a tutor between two or three children from the same estate cuts the cost per child.

Budgeting a term

Here is a simple way to estimate. A Kenyan school term is roughly 12 to 14 weeks. At two one-hour sessions a week:

Rate per hourPer week (2 hours)Per 13-week term
KSh 500KSh 1,000KSh 13,000
KSh 700KSh 1,400KSh 18,200
KSh 1,000KSh 2,000KSh 26,000

That is a significant cost, so target the one or two learning areas where your child needs most help, and review after six weeks. Our guide on how to choose a CBC tutor explains how to tell whether tuition is working.

Ways to keep costs down

  • Share sessions with a neighbour’s child at the same grade.
  • Use online lessons for subjects that do not need practical work.
  • Book tuition for the weeks before KPSEA or KJSEA rather than all year.
  • Combine a tutor with free practice, such as our CBC Challenge quizzes and revision papers.

On the CBC Guides tutor directory, every tutor shows their own hourly rate, and listing is free, so there is no platform commission built into the price.
