Updated October 2026. A CBC assessment number is the learner’s KNEC number used for KPSEA, KJSEA results and Grade 10 placement. It is assigned when the school registers the learner for KNEC assessments, and you can get it from the class teacher or head teacher, the KPSEA or KJSEA result slip, or the school’s registration records. It is different from the UPI (NEMIS/KEMIS) number and from the birth certificate number.

Where to find the assessment number
- Ask the school: heads of institutions hold the KNEC registration list.
- Check a KPSEA or KJSEA result slip or the screenshot you saved from the results portal.
- Check the Grade 10 admission letter, which repeats it.
What the assessment number is used for
| Task | What you need |
|---|---|
| Check KPSEA or KJSEA results | Assessment number (see how to check KPSEA and KJSEA results) |
| Check Grade 10 placement | Assessment number and junior school KNEC code (Grade 10 placement and appeals) |
| Download the Grade 10 admission letter | Same two details (admission letter guide) |
| School transfer and admission | UPI number (KEMIS UPI number) |
Assessment number vs UPI vs index number
The assessment number is KNEC’s identifier for CBC assessments. The UPI is the Ministry’s learner record number used for admissions, transfers and capitation. The KCSE index number is the 8-4-4 exam equivalent. Keep all three in one note on your phone.
Lost or wrong assessment number
Ask the head teacher to confirm it from the school’s KNEC records. If a name or detail is wrong, raise it through the school quickly, before results or placement.
