Looking for a practical grade 7 lesson plan you can use tomorrow morning? This sample covers Laboratory Safety in Grade 7 Integrated Science, written to match a 40-minute junior-school period and the inquiry approach in the current curriculum design. Copy the structure, change the sub-strand, and keep your professional documents TPAD-ready.

Where This Grade 7 Lesson Plan Comes From

Grade 7 Integrated Science sits in Strand 1.0 Scientific Investigation. Sub-strand 1.2 Laboratory Safety is allocated about 14 suggested lessons in the KICD Grade 7 curriculum designs (revised 2024). The design expects inquiry-based teaching with the 5Es: engage, explore, explain, elaborate and evaluate. Junior-school lessons are 40 minutes, and Integrated Science has five lessons a week under the Ministry’s CBE timetabling guidelines.

This is a sample for teachers, not an official approved template. Adapt outcomes and resources to your class size, lab access and school rules.

Sample Lesson: Laboratory Safety (40 Minutes)

Learning area: Integrated Science  |  Grade: 7  |  Strand: Scientific Investigation  |  Sub-strand: Laboratory Safety

Specific learning outcomes: By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to:

  • identify common laboratory hazards in a school science room;
  • demonstrate at least three safe practices when handling apparatus;
  • explain why personal protective equipment and clear exit routes matter.

Key inquiry question: How do we keep everyone safe when we work with science materials?

Core competencies: Critical thinking and problem solving; communication and collaboration. Values: Responsibility and respect. PCI: Safety and security.

Resources: Chart of lab rules, empty reagent bottles (labelled water/vinegar), apron or lab coat, gloves, dustpan and brush, learner notebooks. If you have no lab, use a cleared classroom corner as a “mini lab”.

Introduction / Engage (5 minutes)

Show a short “spot the danger” picture: a bag on the floor, an unlabelled bottle, a learner tasting a liquid. Ask pairs to name three risks. Link to yesterday’s introduction to Integrated Science so learners see safety as part of every practical.

Explore (12 minutes)

In groups of four, learners walk a marked “lab trail” (or desk stations) and tick hazards on a simple checklist: spills, broken glass, blocked exit, open flame symbol, food near apparatus. One learner records, one checks exits, one checks labels, one reports. Keep movement orderly; large classes can rotate two groups while others sketch a safe lab layout.

Explain (8 minutes)

Groups feed back. On the board, build three columns: Hazard, Why it is dangerous, Safe practice. Cover labelling, no tasting, tying hair, washing hands, reporting breakage, and knowing where the first-aid kit and fire extinguisher are. Confirm school-specific rules from your head of science.

Elaborate (10 minutes)

Role-play: one learner pretends a beaker cracks; the group must say the correct sequence (alert teacher, do not touch glass with bare hands, use dustpan, dispose as instructed). Extend by asking how the same rules apply at home when using kitchen chemicals.

Evaluate / Conclusion (5 minutes)

Exit ticket: each learner writes two lab rules and one reason they matter. Collect three random tickets to spot who needs a follow-up mini-lesson. Assign: draw a labelled “safe science corner” for homework.

Assessment Rubric (Quick)

  • Meeting expectations: Names hazards correctly and states matching safe practices.
  • Approaching: Names hazards but mixes up the safe response.
  • Below: Cannot yet link a hazard to a safe action even with prompts.

How to Reuse This Grade 7 Lesson Plan

Swap the sub-strand title and outcomes for Laboratory Apparatus, Mixtures, or Electrical Energy. Keep the 5Es timing. File the plan with your scheme of work and record of work; TSC expects updated lesson plans among the professional documents maintained for appraisal (see the Teachers Service Commission performance-management downloads).

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a Grade 7 Integrated Science lesson be?
Under current CBE timetabling guidance, junior-school lessons are 40 minutes. Integrated Science is allocated five lessons a week, with one double lesson allowed for practicals.

Do I need a full laboratory for this lesson?
No. A cleared classroom corner with labelled containers and a rules chart is enough for safety concepts. Book the lab when you move to apparatus and chemicals.

Must the lesson plan follow the 5Es?
The Grade 7 Integrated Science design emphasises inquiry with the 5Es. Schools may use their own house style, but the engage–explore–explain–elaborate–evaluate flow matches what CSOs and appraisers often look for.

Where can I get more Grade 7 lesson plan ideas?
Start from the official KICD Grade 7 designs, then adapt. Pair each plan with a short formative check and keep evidence for TPAD.

Ten-minute check: try the free Grade 7 CBC Challenge. It has 10 questions, each marked on the spot with the working, and it shows which topics to practise next.
