This Grade 8 Integrated Science revision guide covers every sub-strand in the current curriculum design, with the key ideas, common mistakes and quick ways to practise. Grade 8 science has three strands: Mixtures, Elements and Compounds; Living Things and the Environment; and Force and Energy. Work through the eight sub-strands below, test yourself on each one, and you will also be building the base for Grade 9 and KJSEA.

What Grade 8 Integrated Science Revision Should Cover
The KICD Grade 8 Integrated Science curriculum design lists these sub-strands and suggested lessons:
| Strand | Sub-strand | Lessons |
|---|---|---|
| Mixtures, Elements and Compounds | Elements and compounds | 18 |
| Physical and chemical changes | 22 | |
| Classes of fire | 20 | |
| Living Things and the Environment | The cell | 20 |
| Movement of materials in and out of the cell | 16 | |
| Reproduction in human beings | 18 | |
| Force and Energy | Transformation of energy | 20 |
| Pressure | 16 |
Grade 8 is not a national exam year, but it is assessed. Pulse Kenya reported that KNEC’s 2026 school-based assessment schedule included Integrated Science for Grades 7 and 8.
Strand 1: Mixtures, Elements and Compounds
Elements and compounds
Know the difference between an atom, an element, a molecule and a compound. Learn the symbols of common elements (H, O, C, N, Na, Cl, Fe, Cu, Ca) and write simple word equations, for example iron + oxygen → iron oxide. Link elements to everyday uses and food labels, such as iron and calcium in packaged foods.
Physical and chemical changes
Describe particles in solids, liquids and gases. Remember that impurities raise boiling point and lower melting point, which is why salt water boils above 100°C. A physical change (melting ice) is usually reversible with no new substance; a chemical change (burning paper, rusting) makes a new substance.
Classes of fire
Learn the fire triangle: fuel, heat and oxygen. Remove one and the fire goes out. Know which method suits each class of fire, for example never use water on burning oil or electrical fires. This sub-strand is practical and often tested through scenarios.
Strand 2: Living Things and the Environment
The cell
Draw and label plant and animal cells as seen under a light microscope. Plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplasts and a large vacuole; animal cells do not. Practise magnification: magnification = eyepiece lens × objective lens.
Movement of materials in and out of the cell
Diffusion is movement of particles from high to low concentration. Osmosis is movement of water through a semi-permeable membrane from a dilute to a more concentrated solution. A classic practical is placing potato strips or raisins in salt water and plain water.
Reproduction in human beings
Revise the menstrual cycle and practical ways to manage it, fertilisation and implantation, and the symptoms and prevention of common sexually transmitted infections. Use correct terms and focus on health and responsibility.
Strand 3: Force and Energy
Force and Energy closes Grade 8 Integrated Science revision with two calculation-friendly topics.
Transformation of energy
Name forms of energy (potential, kinetic, chemical, electrical, sound, light, heat) and classify sources as renewable or non-renewable. Trace a chain such as a torch: chemical → electrical → light and heat. Remember the safety rules for electrical appliances.
Pressure
Pressure in solids = force ÷ area, so a sharp knife cuts better and wide tyres sink less. Pressure in liquids increases with depth, which is why a dam wall is thicker at the bottom. Know everyday applications such as drinking straws and bicycle pumps.
A 4-Week Grade 8 Integrated Science Revision Plan
- Week 1: elements and compounds; physical and chemical changes.
- Week 2: classes of fire; the cell.
- Week 3: diffusion and osmosis; human reproduction.
- Week 4: energy transformation; pressure; one full mixed paper.
For effective Grade 8 Integrated Science revision, study 30 to 40 minutes a day: 10 minutes reading notes, 20 minutes answering questions, and 5 minutes explaining one idea aloud. Our junior school revision timetable shows how to fit science around other subjects.
Practise With Quizzes and Papers
Make the free quizzes part of your Grade 8 Integrated Science revision. Start with a quick round in the free Grade 8 CBC Challenge to see which sub-strands need work. Then work through the Grade 8 Integrated Science revision papers; the first questions are free.
A Day Pass for KSh 20 or a Monthly Pass for KSh 500 opens every full paper with worked answers, plus the Grade 8 holiday homework pack, and every question is checked by a teacher.

Frequently Asked Questions
What topics are in Grade 8 Integrated Science?
Eight sub-strands: elements and compounds, physical and chemical changes, classes of fire, the cell, movement of materials in and out of the cell, reproduction in human beings, transformation of energy and pressure.
Is Grade 8 Integrated Science assessed by KNEC?
Yes, through school-based assessment. KNEC’s 2026 schedule, as reported by Pulse Kenya, included Integrated Science for Grades 7 and 8.
Which Grade 8 science topic is hardest?
Many learners find osmosis, word equations and pressure calculations hardest. Practise them with short daily questions rather than long reading sessions.
How long should Grade 8 Integrated Science revision take each day?
About 30 to 40 minutes, mostly answering questions. Cover all eight sub-strands over four weeks, then do a mixed paper.
Does Grade 8 science matter for KJSEA?
Grade 8 work builds the base for Grade 9 science, and school-based assessments across junior school feed into the learner’s record before KJSEA.
