Grade 7 English Revision Guide: Strands, Grammar and Tips

CBC Guides teamUpdated 28 Oct 20265 min read

Last reviewed: 28 October 2026

Effective Grade 7 English revision covers four things: listening and speaking, reading (including the class reader), grammar and writing. Grade 7 is the first year of junior school, and English here builds the skills tested in KJSEA at the end of Grade 9 and in school-based assessment every year. This guide sets out what the KICD design covers and how to revise each part.

How Grade 7 English Is Organised

The revised KICD Grade 7 English curriculum design suggests 150 lessons, split into four strands:

StrandSuggested lessonsExamples of sub-strands
Listening and Speaking30Polite language, oral narratives, sounds and word stress, interviews, speeches, oral reports
Reading (Reading 1 and 2)60Intensive and independent reading, note making, summary, poetry, oral literature, the class reader
Grammar in Use30Nouns, verbs and tenses, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, determiners, phrasal verbs, subject–verb agreement
Writing30Punctuation, paragraphs, friendly letters, narrative and descriptive compositions, dialogues, notices and posters

Reading gets double the time of any other strand, so it deserves double the revision time too.

The Grade 7 Class Reader: a Novella

The design names the novella as the class reader genre for Grade 7. Learners preview the text, then study main characters, character traits and the sequence of events. The aim is to build a reading culture and prepare learners for Literature in English later. Schools choose the specific title, so check which book your child’s class is reading.

A simple way to revise it: one page per chapter with three headings: what happens, who is involved, and one quotation or moment that shows a character’s trait. Before a test, your child should be able to retell the story in order in two minutes.

Grammar in Use: Key Points With Examples

  • Regular and irregular verbs: walk → walked, but go → went, write → wrote. Keep a list of 30 irregular verbs and test it weekly.
  • Simple present and past: “She reads every day” (habit) vs “She read the novella yesterday” (finished action).
  • Comparative and superlative adjectives: tall, taller, tallest; good, better, best; beautiful, more beautiful, most beautiful.
  • Subject–verb agreement: “The list of names is on the board” (the subject is list, not names).
  • Phrasal verbs: “look after” (care for), “give up” (stop), “put off” (postpone).
  • Affirmative and negative sentences: “He has finished” becomes “He has not finished”.

More practice is in our English grammar revision and active, passive and reported speech guides.

Reading: Comprehension, Notes and Summary

Comprehension questions test the main idea, details, vocabulary in context and synonyms or antonyms. For note making and summary, teach your child to underline key points, then rewrite them in their own words within the word limit. Copying whole sentences usually loses marks. For poems, ask: who is speaking, what is the mood, and which images or sound patterns stand out? Our guide to answering poetry questions in junior school shows how.

Writing That Scores

Grade 7 writing moves from legible handwriting and punctuation to full compositions. Learners plan, draft, revise and edit narrative compositions, write friendly letters and dialogues, and produce functional texts such as packing and shopping lists, notices and posters. Three habits make a big difference:

  1. Spend three minutes planning: beginning, middle, end.
  2. Give each paragraph one job and start it with a clear topic sentence.
  3. Keep a personal list of commonly misspelt words and test it every Friday.

See our junior school composition tips for model openings.

Listening and Speaking at Home

This strand is assessed in class, often through oral tasks. Practise at home by asking your child to retell a news story in one minute, read a poem aloud with correct stress and intonation, or interview a relative and report back. It builds confidence for oral reports and speeches.

A Four-Week Grade 7 English Revision Plan

  1. Week 1: grammar, two topics a day with ten sentences each.
  2. Week 2: class reader chapter cards and two poems.
  3. Week 3: one comprehension passage and one summary a day.
  4. Week 4: a composition and a functional text every other day, marked against the habits above.

School-based assessment counts. As reported by Pulse Kenya, KNEC’s 2026 school-based assessment guidelines listed English among the Grade 7 written assessments.
