The Holiday After KJSEA: What Grade 9 Leavers Can Do Before Grade 10

Last reviewed: 24 October 2026

When the last KJSEA paper ends on Friday 30 October 2026, Grade 9 learners have finished junior school’s national assessment. What follows is a long break while results and placement are processed, before Grade 10 begins. No dates for the 2026 cohort’s results or Grade 10 reporting had been announced as of 24 October 2026, but the break will be weeks long. Used well, it can give your child a confident start in senior school.

Week One: Rest

After months of revision and a week of papers, children need a genuine rest. Sleep, time with family and friends, and some unstructured play are healthy. Resist the temptation to start “Grade 10 tuition” on Monday 2 November.

Reading is the one habit that helps in every pathway. Encourage at least 20 minutes a day of something your child enjoys, in English or Kiswahili. Senior school requires English and Kiswahili (or Kenyan Sign Language) as core subjects for every learner, whatever the pathway.

Keep Mathematics Fresh

Every senior school learner takes Mathematics. STEM learners take Core Mathematics, while those in Social Sciences and Arts and Sports Science take Essential Mathematics. Two or three short practice sessions a week stop skills from fading over a long break. Our guide to Core vs Essential Mathematics explains the difference.

Explore the Pathway

The pathway choice made in Grade 9 shapes the next three years. The holiday is a good time to explore it in real life:

  • STEM: try simple home experiments, coding tutorials, or helping with a repair or farm project.
  • Social Sciences: read news, write a short blog or diary, or volunteer with a community group.
  • Arts and Sports Science: join a choir, drama group, art class or sports club.

Learn a Practical Skill

Basic computer skills, cooking, budgeting pocket money or simple first aid all help a learner settle into boarding or a new day school. Community Service Learning is also a core senior school subject, so volunteering now is good preparation.

Prepare for Reporting

  1. Keep the KJSEA assessment number and documents safe.
  2. Once placement is out, read the admission letter and fee structure carefully.
  3. Budget for uniform and the shopping list, especially for boarding.
  4. Look up the school’s cluster and location in the Senior School Finder.

Talk About Expectations

Senior school brings more independence, new subjects and, for boarders, life away from home. Talk with your child about what they expect, what worries them and how they will ask for help. Learners who know how to approach a class teacher or counsellor settle faster.

Screen Time and Safety

Long holidays often mean more time online. Agree simple rules about phone use, and talk about staying safe with new contacts and online offers, including fake messages about results or school places.

Keep Learning at Home

If you have younger children in Grades 4 to 8, our holiday revision packs start at KSh 120 per grade. The Year Pass at KSh 4,000 opens every paper, quiz and revision book on the site for a year, and a second child is half price.

Ten-minute check: try the free Grade 9 CBC Challenge. It has 10 questions, each marked on the spot with the working, and it shows which topics to practise next.
